Miss fire
      #383398 - 08/10/09 12:14 PM

Had an issue with my muzzleloader this weekend wondered if any of you have encountered the same. first off I am shooting a TC Black Diamond XR with triple 7 50gr pellets and maxiballs and firein with musket caps.
I fired a few rounds through cleaned nipple and breach along with a nylon brush through the bore. Fired a couple more and then miss fire. I put 3 caps through it with the same results so I tore down cleaned/dried good to pop a few more the next day. Next day loaded and same miss fire. Pulled the breach plug and didnt see any fouling. Replaced nipple with new. Decided to go with loose powder and fired another few rounds with no issues went back to pellets and miss fire again. So yesterday I started duplexing the loads like I've seen done in flintlocks shooting 30gr of loose triple7 under a triple7 50gr pellet and had no issues.
Sure has me stumped

Have you tried diffrent caps? I once had a problem with my TC using #11 Percussion caps. I bought some new ones and it made all the difference. Possibly getting a slow or weak burn may not ignite the pellets, but will ignite loose powder. Just my 2 cents.

Kevin,

I have only had limited experience with the pellets. The pyrodex pellets had one end that contained actual black powder, which was darker than the pyrodex. It appears that 777 pellets lack this. I would think that you could get away with as little as 5 grains of loose powder. On my traditional hawkens I would always put a little bit of loose powder, I bet less than a grain, under the nipple to insure that the fire would start. Once I started doing that, I never had a misfire with traditional guns.

The best caps I've found were Dynamit Nobel, which are the hottest ones around. You might try that brand over CCI or others.

Been shooting an inline for 12 years or more, and still use the loose powder. Just works every time.

A lot of my family shoot the black diamonds. We all shot pellets when they were legal here and never had an issue with the pellets igniting, we had missfires but it was always due to some kind of fouling or moisture. I had that issue with my Knight and the gunsmith drilled a slightly bigger hole through my plug. I was using no 11's though, can't imagine your not getting enough flame out of a musket cap. I guess I would check with TC or a gunsmith to see if it was safe to do that with yours. I havn't had many issues since. But all in all I've shot a lot of pellets and have had very few issues because of them.

Been a while for me shooting smokers but I believe I upgraded to a "hot shot" nipple? Think that's what it was called....had a slightly bigger hole. I dn't have issues with miss fires but I shoot powder over pellets.

The pellets could have slightly picked up some moisture in storage somewhere between the manufacturure and your breech. I would get new pellets from a different lot#. I shot only pyrodex pellets and had no issues, but went back to powder because I felt it burned more thoroughly in my 22 inch barrel.
