Hey.. Would you guys and gals do me a favor and go to this web site Wolf survey and vote. The poll is about half way down the page and it is a simple 3 option survey. It's one of the local news stations here in Missoula but if one of our judges decides to rule the same way as last year it will DIRECTLY affect you guys as well. Thanks. (On a side note, they typicaly discuss the survey results on the air)

I hate the thought of killing wolves, but I don't believe they can safely exist in the lower 48 in large numbers. I don't care if they are shot or not, but I think that's the most efficient way to control them.

First, I will buy my tag they day they go on sale. I am not lover of wolves, but I think it is cool listening to them howl at night.
Second, hunters shooting wolves is not going to be very effective at all. In Idaho, where we need to reduce the population by at least 500 animals, I predict there will be less than 150 legally killed by hunters. There is a reason they were poisoned and trapped in the past. They are all over where we hunt, and I have seen tracks all over, as well as listening to them howl at night, but I have never seen one in the wild. The sonsofbitches are cagey.

I've seen 'em. But not very often. Seems they are pretty elusive critters. They open it up I guess I'll do my part and buy a tag. If I got the chance I'd take it I suppose even though I have about zero interest in taking one as a game animal. What the hell do you do with a friggin wolf once you kill it?
I agree with Mojo in that I doubt hunting by the general public will put much of a dent in the problem. They ought to bring some proffessionals in to thin 'em out.

I think they are an amazing animal too and to here them is like nothing else other than maybe bugling elk. BUT they are litteraly decimating deer and elk populations all across the state. I have come across them several times and like Mojo said, they are sneaky. I too think huntingg them will have little effect on population control cause once there shot at they will get even sneakier. I have seen them several times, oddly enough most of the times its heading over the hill to come catch a steelhead or a salmon. Sturge...thanks for the tip ;O)!

Jim shooting them via sporting methods is not a efficient way to control them in the slightest bit. It didn't work the first time, it won't work this time.

Got ahead of myself, I didn't read down the post far enough and everyone already stole my thunder. It's not so cool to hear them at night out your front door and then a different bunch out your back door. I said this last year and it still stands, anyone who wants to shoot one, I will do the scouting, you pull the trigger.
Jake, I don't like the thought of shooting most things I can't eat either, but this is along the same lines. It's all about putting meat on the table and if this keeps up the only place you'll be able to do that is at Albertsons. I hate to be a dooms-day-ist but it the truth and it won't change until people realize it.
This is not by chance, the day they turned them loose in Bear Valley one guy was quoted saying "this is the beginning of the end of hunting in this state."

These wolves are not native to this area I know a couple of old times who told me about the wolves that use to inhabit the area. They said that they were a bit larger than a yote but thats it. These things are not native and should be treated as an invasive species and wiped out!!!!!

Haven't seen any sign right here in the valley since March/April till last night. My family saw a young dog, maybe 60 pounds run across the road about 1/4 mile from my driveway. Dark gray but really ragged looking, kinda like a bear looks this time of year. I guess at that size it would be last years pup. Really not a good sign when you see them during the summer.

My friends counted 18 wolves in one draw during elk season last year north of Dworshak. They were all pretty much in range, one came out and sat in the road about 20 yards away. We saw fresh tracks every morning while deer hunting and heard them howling not only at night but during the day. I saw one racing up a spur road above me right before dark.
Another guy I know had wolves follow him and his brother up a trail while deer hunting. They sat below him snarling while he was up on a ledge. He was very close to shooting before they finally backed off.
The outfitters near where we hunt in the Middle Fork have had wolves sit next to the trail as the pack train goes by, snarling at the mules and horses.
A husband and wife were spiked out upriver from our camp in the Middle Fork, they had wolves come into their camp at night and tear up a rib cage from the wife's deer she shot just outside of camp. This was about 25 yards from their little spike tent.
I think quite a few wolves can be shot at first, but these are intelligent animals that learn quickly. The biggest mistake the biologists made was to transplant the big Canadian wolves that were never here to begin with. If they wouldn't have f**ked with nature and let it happen naturally, the wolves would have eventually come back. They were slowly repopulating anyhow.
The economic impact of allowing wolf populations to swell is going to be huge. Not only for ranchers losing stock, but for hunting outfitters and small towns that rely on hunters for a good chunk of their yearly income. Wolves are not just an Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming problem now, they are into Oregon and Washington. There was recently a second confirmed pack in Washington. It won't be long before they are spilling off the Okanogan Highlands into the Cascades. I believe the mule deer wintering grounds near Chelan are in danger, and not long after that the elk wintering grounds near Naches.
Sounds pretty crazy, but I can see it happening in the not too distant future.
