I was told that a new blank will hit the market after the ICast show.
Rummer has it Gary Loomis is getting back into making blanks?

Yes he is, I've talked to a fellow who has looked over some of the prototypes.
They are going to be very similar to the early Loomis designs maximized to get the best performance possible. Polished graphite with no paint or finish of any kind he was told. That alone pulls 3 to 5 % off the weight of a blank.

It also saves a lot on production costs, that is why loomis started doing it in the first place. Exposed graphite isn't necessarily a good thing  I hope he has some cool tricks up his sleeve.

I suspect that Loomis is not applying a finish to the new blanks because of the affect it has on the performance of the blank. A finish adds weight but does not add to the stiffness because the finish has a very low modulus of elasticity. In other words adding a finish to the blank has the same affect as lowering the modulus of elasticity of the material used, carbon fiber or glass.

Adding finish to the rods won't improve their durability, it's just paint on an already stable structure.

Washougal is correct. The finish on rods is mainly cosmetic and adds very little if anything to the durability of the blank. The best way to increase the durability is to LOWER the modulas of elasticity of the material being used, either carbon fiber or glass. As the modulus of elasticity is lowered something called strain energy goes up. Strain energy is the amount of energy that the material will absorb before reaching the strength, usually the tensile strength.
The problem with this though is that as the modulus of elasticity goes down the weight, sensitivity and the resonant frequency (rods responsiveness) go down. Everything is a trade off, there is no free lunch.
