Reloading Bench Size new
      #382974 - 08/02/09 01:59 PM

I am going to be getting a Dillion XL650. In preperation for that I need to build a reloading bench. The problem is I have no baseline as where to start with the size of my reloading bench.

Are there any reasources out there (on the net, in print or personal experience) a guy can use to help design/layout a bench?

Thanks in advance for all your helpful answers!

You can start with the size of commercially available benches. Keep in mind that you need to make it rigid and it is prbably a good idea to attach it to the wall as well.

You can buy a kit like the one at Cabelas. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...rset=ISO-8859-1

Keep in mind that you'll probably add additional presses, so leave room for them!

Here's mine before I have moved my gear to it. Attach it to the studs in the wall behind because using a progressive press will mean repetitive strain on your bench.

The top is 1.25 inches thick, 10 feet long, and covered with formica. You'll spend less on wood if you do it yourself, and get a better bench. Of couse, it depends on how much room you have.

Over build it. It doesn't cost that much, maybe $150. (I got my formica on sale at a discount mfg home supply house for $25.) Also, use fender washers on the underside of the bench when you attach the press. Don't just nail it together, bolt the whole thing together with carriage bolts, I used 5/16" bolts. By the way, over build it.

Nice bench, Dogfish! I made mine almost identical, but not quite as long. Incidentally, I used Lag Screws to assemble it, and is still tight, even though it is now about 10 years old!

Do a craigslist search for "bowling alley"...these things make killer table tops and have a very durable finish already applied. I picked one up for a shop table (about 4x8) for $45 in Bellingham a few years ago. You can find both maple and pine sections depending on where they were in the lane...high impact areas usually get the maple (and a few dents). I mounted mine to an old steel drafting table frame.

Here's some in the Portland CL.

4X8 is a great size build the base with 2x4's and 4x4 legs I have a set of plans that I followed to build mine. I can scan it and email it to you. |It even has a storage cupboard across the back.
