Time for build #2
      #384008 - 08/18/09 04:43 PM

Today I ordered an XST1143 blank and components so I can build one to replace the 1143 I broke during last years 'Tilla. Looking forward to this one now that I am armed with a little bit of knowledge and experience!

3RivrFishr,
That is a beautiful blank isn't it? I have built a number of them and really like to use the new light weight Alps guides on them. Take a look at them. You will get a lot better performing rod with the small light weight Alps versus more conventional guides.

Good choice of blanks but something tells me you have already fished one or two of the XST's.

Yes Karry, I have fished and enjoyed the XST phenom and caught a whole bunch of fishies it. Ive also seen more than one get broken while a certain monkey who shall remain nameless...lets call him "Castaway" was jumping around the boat on them. I broke my prize possesion while trying to dislodge bedrock from the bottom of the Clearwater last year which is why I am doing this next build. I should mention that it is plenty durable and I used it hard for steelhead and even harder for pikeminnows. I caught well over 500 pikeminnows with it. I just need not use it for dredging river channels and keep monkeys away from it! Order confirmed and shipped today. B-runs B-ware...

Oh, and I did order Alps guides. Couldn't tell you if they are lightwieght or "normal" ??? They are XPTCFCG and XPTCYTCG. I ordered extras to keep on hand.

Considering the color scheme for the new one. Was thinking teal green with blue inlays and trim. The cobalt and black that Karry used on the last one looked pretty slick with the blue guide inserts...not sure what I'll do for sure till I get the stuff and take a look at it all.

One question about wrapping...do y'all prefer to have your thread coming out of your tension device then over the top and rotate the rod toward you or do you run it from underneath and turn the rod away from you as you wrap? Does it matter?

Re: Time for build #2 new [Re: 3RivrFishr]
      #384470 - 08/24/09 09:06 PM

Friday I picked up some lumber and supplies to make 3 V block rod stands. The gizmos that came with the doohickey I bought from the E-bay hack were too flimsy for my liking. The base with thread tensioners and slidable guide that he built works well but the little plastic arms with wheels for rod stands never felt quite right. I wanted something with stability. I used 1x6 and 1x8 select pine which is kind of soft so I put 2 coats of red oak stain and 4 coats of urathane on them to toughen them up. This evening I glued & screwed the V-blocks onto their bases and put the finishing touches on with felt for the V's and bottom of the bases. I also stuck some little magnet strips on the sides to hold razor blades and other metallic doo-dads as I noticed I was constantly searching for it during my last build. Anyway, my wife thinks the new stands are "pretty".

I got my new XST blank and components today. I'm on vacation next week and will get the build done in between wedding errands and honey-do's and birthdays. I might get the handle done this week if I can swing it.

Oh, and I got the new Rainshadow stickers too. Thanks Karry!

I cant custom build one for you until you tell me what you want. You might get a pink kokanee rod with a Barbie sticker!

Oh yeah, found out I have to go to Spokane Monday so 1st day of vacation is being used by something other than starting the rod project.

Found time today to get the handle assembly done. I spent quite a bit of time reaming since none of the reamers I have were the correct size. Gotta get a set of those dream reamers! I also spent a bit of time sanding the rear grip. I wanted to taper it into the butt cap and round over the leading edge.

So here it is in living color.

All parts ready to go. 12" rear grip, metal butt cap, reel seat, trim ring, foregrip and metal winding check. The winding check, butt cap and trim ring are all the same color.

Foregrip and winding check:

Here it is assembled and curing on the new rod stands:

Not sure when the project will resume. Might get to monkey with it a bit tomorrow then sometime mid-week I can get started wrapping.

Thanks!

Between helping my daughter and future son-in-law get their stuff moved into their apartment, cooking for and entertaining out of town wedding guests and all the other errands that I'm needed for I havent had a whole lot of time this week for working on the new rod. I have a practice blank and have been working on 3 thread trim bands and single thread inlays though. I have finally done enough practicing to feel confident in my abilities. Kind of unnerving having 3 or 4 dudes sitting around the table asking me questions that I dont have answers for and watching me futz up until I got it right! Anyway hope to get it wrapped Sunday or Monday after life returns to "normal". One good thing about having all these out of town guests--its knocking a little bit of rust off my limited spanish!

Well, the Best Man and my son-in-laws' freind missed their flight out of Lewiston Sunday morning because they didnt roll out of bed until 30 minutes before takeoff. Sunday was supposed to be the day to unwind, relax and get some more done on this rod project. Instead I spent the morning booking flights then driving to Spokane and back to get them on a plane and out of our hair.

So I wrapped the 1st couple guides tonight. The wrap design I chose for this one is light blue guide wrap with a 3 thread trim band and a single thread inlay both in spring green. (Seahawk colors) I'm using Pac Bay thread. Its real purdy and it looks great. However, I'm beginning to question the wisdom of using single thread inlays so early in my rod building career. It is adding alot of extra time as I work to get it all perfect. I'm sure it will get easier and faster though.

You should see the decal he wants on the Barbie pole. I think it may be illegal in some states!

Finally!!

Got all the guides and ferrule wrapped, tip top installed and holographic decal ready to go. Applying the decal and adding some wraps to finish that off tomorrow then its off to epoxy.

....time to order up the next project! Gonna do a hot shot rod on a Rainshadow HS1025.

Very timely post. I was planning on ordering today but work was stupid crazy today and I couldnt get to it. I had UD guides in mind. Now you got me considering a woven handle. What color thread looks good on the oly green blank?

BTW, I checked the technical forum this morning...quite a shock!

I'm not sure there are any Green HS blanks around we dropped that color other than in the fly and now only Matte finish is available.

Sorry for your loss that's just Crazy! There are several builders around you so maybe one of them will post up. You could drop me an email as well I can point you in the right direction. Who built you your last one?

Thats from the website. I read it wrong and didnt read it as oly grn OR Matte clear. Actually prefer the matte blank anyway. Leaves a wide open pallet for thread colors.
