What a Sight!!!! new
      #384051 - 08/18/09 11:58 PM

What a sight!!!

I was out at Westport today. Decided to get away from the heat of Oly. I was just south of the jetties for a nice picnic enjoying great company. Much sun, nice breeze, good food/drink, and few people. It was very relaxing watching boats come back to port, pelicans gliding in the breeze and the other sights, sounds , and smells of the ocean.

As I’m looking out, I notice a HUGE splash maybe ¼ mile out. I think maybe it is a white cap. As less than one minute passes I think I see a similar splash out of the corner of my eye. Now I make a comment about what I’ve seen and ask about whales in the area. I’ve been feet from grays, orca’s. and sea lions on my boat in the region and am familiar with feeding behavior of all. As we discuss this I notice birds are diving but I’m thinking there is no way that splash is coming from that bird. This continued for about 45 minutes! One of the largest, longest boils I’ve observed from land in the PNW.

After confirming to myself what I have been seeing, my excitement rises. What I would have done to have a boat right there and cruise out to that action. Unbelievable action was going on. I’m looking around to see if anyone else sees this because I’m dying. Side note, had to sell the boat a few months ago so I’m land locked right now and not happyL What a season to not have a boat!

If the action I observed today is any indication of the current season, we should all bow our head and pay homage to the salmon powers. It was hard not being able to go catch salmon but I did come home with a few pounds of spot shrimp. Damn, that alone was worth the 80 minute trip!

Just had to pass on this event!

May have been part of the group I watched near Astoria a little over a week ago...watched them spout and work their way slowly north for over an hour. Had to have been 40-50 whales in that group(s)...spread out over at least a mile. Got a great sunburn for my efforts.

Ya...I think it was a group of humpbacks. It's great getting out to explore what the region has to offer. You never know what u may experience!
