My buddy Greg, his wife Gin, Sturgeonator and I went dove hunting this morning for opening day. Aside from being a crappy shot again (it happens every dove opener) we managed limits by 9:30. My dog is finally getting the hang of hunting, but she hates the way dove feathers fall off the bird. She likes the live flappers best, but she found most of the birds I shot.
Back at it in the morning.

I would if I could stand to eat them - not sure if it's in the preparation or just the bird itself. How you cooking them up Mojo?

My fave is heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet, then chuck in some fresh garlic. Let it brown. Then roll the breasts in flour and cajun spice mix and fry in the olive oli till medium rare. You can eat them like that, or you can throw them in some cream of mushroom soup and bake at 400 for 20 minutes, then serve the dove chunks and gravy over rice.
You can also wrap in bacon and either bbq or throw them under the broiler till medium rare.
The key to doves is medium rare. Cook till well done and they are dry and taste like poop.

That recipe work for grouse as well? Bacon...you have to love the stuff. You can wrap a turd in it and make it palatable.

We take a breast and put a peice of fresh jalapeno, two peices of pineapple, then wrap bacon around it, sauce it up with yoshida's and put it on the BBQ. There are as good as you can get.

I hear you Jake. I've got a nice bruise on my rt. shoulder... I did shoot a bunch of doves, and my puppy was awesome. She found several birds in the tall weeds the other (experienced) dogs ran right past. It is definitley exactly what she needed for a early season tune up. She is gonna be awesome!

I have a buddy who used to prepare them similar to this (using the cream of mushroom soup) and called it Dove stew and I always thought I was eating some kind of gourmet meal!
