those poor, poor tribal hunters

Pretty nice equipment for people running on at the mouth about heritage. Typical. Their grandpa did it so they think they should be able to do it. The tribes sure get a lot of sweet talk in the Everett Herald.

I had done some research into the Makah whaling thing back when that whole mess was underway, and was really amazed at the preparation that went into the original hunts. The way I feel, if they want to claim hunting, fishing, whaling...whatever...on the basis of their heritage, then they need to do it the way their ancestors did it, otherwise join the current dominant (ie rule-making) society and conform to the laws and regulations set forth.

Quote from a written account of the preparation for a Makah whale hunt:
The Makah whaling practices of ancient times were also quite complicated and involved. According to Curtis, at times the Makah would make use of a human corpse during their whaling rituals. "The body must be that of a male not more than four days dead, and it is said that sometimes a small boy was killed for the purpose. Occasionally the whaler flayed the body after removing the forearms and the lower legs, cutting the skin down the median line from the forehead and along the inside of the legs. After being dried in the sun with as little handling as possible, the skin was hung over the back-piece of the whaler’s head dress." Curtis goes on to describe how the whaler would then tie the corpse—sans arms and legs—onto his back and wear it during the hunt. The actual hunt involved repeatedly spearing the whale, while trying to avoid its dangerous thrashing body. After the whale died, a Makah would jump in the sea, and sew the whale’s mouth shut to prevent it from sinking. Then the whale crew would begin the slow and laborious process of paddling the whale back to shore.

I would dearly love to see that attention to detail in today's "heritage" hunting efforts. They might have an argument then.

...so you want the Makah to start killing little boys to make their hunts successful? Just checking...

...wondering just how accurate and truthful that account of the whaling rituals... Wouldnt' be the first time history was enhanced with the re-telling.

A lot of "tribal members" today have more european blood in their veins than they do native. Seems kinda weird to cry about the white man when really, they are 75% white man.

No more whales have been killed because they taste like crap. Why eat whale fat when you can have a burger! Or a fresh salmon or steelhead you netted from a costal river. If they had to eat what the caught. Dried fish cured in the sun and stored for months in a hut, well you get the picture.
I just do not agree with the current arangement.

Whale meat tastes close to beef. Whale Blubber (fat) tastes like crap. Eating what they caught was the original intention of the "Substance" part of the treaties.

They can start with a few of the hoodlums breaking into rigs at the rivers...no loss there, and there's nothing said about age and heritage of the sacrificed dude.

Regarding authenticity of the report...the guy pretty much made a life of documenting the native cultures. Not to say there isn't room for tall tales, but this aint some washed up-at-the-end-of-her-miserable-dirt-road-has-been sociology prof from Everett Community College going on an man-hater rant (sorry for the overly-specifics there...still have scar tissue from that biatch).

When the whalers gear up like this guy, and eat their catch, I'm all for it.

I wouldn't mess with that dude in a dark alley. I am all for him (or his decendents more likely) harpooning a whale that would feed the tribe for a month or so, using traditional methods.

I was just ribbing you before. I hear what you are saying. I do believe we owe the tribes, in that we must honor our treaties. We break any treaties, then any country has the right to break the treaties we have with them. There are many aspects of our lives that are transparently governed by treaty agreements, and I guarantee your life is better with them in place.

That being said, any tre steward of the land and all it's resources would never wipe out a herd of deer or elk just for the fun of it. They would be carefully monitored and only have their numbers reduced to what they were last year (sustainment).

That's the native version of those truck nuts guys hang off their tow hitch. The natives would hang them from the back of their canoe.
