Finally after a month of dabbling with it for a few minutes here and there between helping my daughter get married and moved into thier new apartment, repainting and recarpeting her old bedroom and moving our youngest daughter into that room along with work, church, masonic and shriner functions I have a nice shiney replacement for the XST1143 that I broke last year. Soon I will have a man cave. A tackle/rod making laboratory if you will in which to build spinners, dodgers, jigs, flies, leaders rods and all manner of custom tackle and accessories. Its been a long time waiting for the space but soon I will no longer have to dig all my equipment out and put it all back away. When I'm done with a certain phase of a project it can just stay out till I'm ready to work on the next phase....oh yeah, its gonna be sweet.
Anyway, back to the rod project. I learned a great deal doing this one. Namely how to do a 3 thread trim band and single thread inlay. I also learned that if I apply too much epoxy to the label area during the second coat then come back after 45 minutes to find that the chuck on my dryer motor to unscrewed itself then it is almost impossible to level the epoxy back out. I solved the problem with my dryer but too late for this project. Here is the label with the wavy epoxy:
I made the label on holographic paper designed for inkjet printers. This one is on a "bubble" pattern but I also have stardust and regular holo. After printing I let the ink dry then sprayed 3 coats of Krylon crystal clear gloss acrylic to set the ink so that the epoxy wouldnt goof it up. Turns out that ink jet printers dont print white so anything that you set up to print white is actually blank which allows the holographic pattern to show through making it look electric in the light. Adjustments to the luminosity and color saturation can give cool effects also like on the rest of the printing that is in blue. I set it up to match the thread color and be somewhat translucent so that the holographic pattern still catches the light but reflects it in color.
I already posted the foregrip/reelseat/handle and fighting butt assembly but here it is again completed with the hookeeper.
I was going for a Seahawk theme with the thread colors. I think its close:
Here are a couple closeups of some finished thread wraps. Not perfect due to my dryer motor crashing and low light in the room I applied epoxy in. Next time they will be flawless:
The lessons learned on this one will translate to quicker and bettter builds from now on. Looking forward more experimentation--off angle trim bands, carbon fiber handles, spiral wraps, exposed blank reel seats, etc...
Aside from being frustrated by not having time to get it done I enjoyed the heck out of building it. Cant wait to feel the bottom of the clearwater with it followed by the satisfying thump of a B-run headshake!
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and shared their knowledge. Especially to Karry for getting me interested in starting in the first place.

We just finished a rod building Video "back to the Basic's" using a card board box,,,Yes a card board box. This is for our rod building 101 Batson University rod building program for High Schools. We are trying to show that anyone can make a fishing rod without throwing a ton of cash out but you will be hooked once you try it and then by all means purchase the machine etc and do not look back..I bring this up because as while I was building on camera I explained several reasons why I'm doing this particular technique so you do not have to make the mistake. I actually tape the chuck of the dryer just to be safe it holds and point that out. So many small variables that I take for granted from learning by mistake I "tried" to point out. The bottom line is that there really is no way to show everything you just have to try and learn and that's the greatest thing about rod building and fishing you can never know it all, constant challenge.
Nice looking hawk stick, I used to have a drift boat that color.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Y'all are too kind.
Geno, I was with you when I broke the old one. I think its only fitting that I be fishing with you when I hook the 1st B-run with the new one!
I could seriously drift exclusively with these rods and be a happy for the rest of my life. I absolutely fell in love with the XST1143. IMO the perfect balance of power and sensativity. Not unlike myself!

Ron, how was the fight with those inlays over your guide feet? When i started learning how to build rods about seven years ago, i got the idea to do that with my HS1021 i built in 2004 and since then i have never done that since. I played hell, when you do that you can never get the inlay straight and when you burnish your threads, you have to be extremely careful around the foot so you don't pulled the inlay! I found it to be extremely frustrating!

Chris, It was definately a frustrating ordeal compounded by having 3-6 people looking over my shoulder while I was trying to figure it out. Particularly on the smaller guides near the tip. I have since found a different technique that is quicker, easier and produces perfectly straight single inlays over the guide feet. Or anywhere else for that matter. If someone unfamiliar with the process were to see the begining of the wrap they would say it looks like a train wreck with all the threads and pull loops taped and tied on. But it works well for me. It still takes patience and dexterity. I just keep telling myself when I get into the detailed stuff and start trippin about how much time I spend on each guide "it takes as much time as it takes..."
Anyway, I'm finishing one up now with single thread inlays over the feet. I'll post the pics when its complete.
Damn you and Karry for getting me into this!

Kevin, notice the lack of single inlay threads on your guide feet? I decided to save myself the frustration on yours!

Lol, people tend to stay clear when i'm wrapping these days. Especially doing a diamond wrap or something complexed. I think i've cursed out everyone in the room once or twice just for being there lmao! Not so bad anymore. Welcome to the addiction. Is your broken xst the one i built ya lol? If so, glad ya learned how to fix it haha! Let karry or i know if ya need a pointer or want to learn something new!

Yep. Thats the one. I have everything put back together and wrapped to match the rest of it with the black thread with electric blue metallic trim. Just gotta get it epoxied and it will be fishing again. Nothing can stop team green barge with 2 XST1143's on board. Oh, and I also have to remember not to high stick the river bottom!
Thanks for the offer on the pointers. When get the urge to start futzing with elaborate butt wraps or get into something I cant figure out I will definately take you up on it.
