Meat down! new
      #386696 - 10/02/09 05:11 PM

This is how it is done!

Taken with my .458 SOCOM. Punched him in the lungs and he dropped within 5 yards of where I hit him.

Once help arrived I got a nice photo!

The only way to take it out, other than whole.

Groceries hangin' in the new shop. Looks like I finished the house just in time.

Deer tomorrow!

55" across, 54" along each main beam. 14" around the bases and 20" spread between the G4's and G5's. For a 5 point, I have no regrets.

Bigger than my previous big bull.

Much bigger. I know, the last one was a puny wimp compared to this one.

Smallest tine is 13", and the circumfrence of the beam where the G4 and G5 part is 11".

Bullets recovered from the chest and neck (kill shot). 214 & 227 grains. Original bullet was 300 grains.

Saw the elk herd as I headed up the valley, but they were in my client's yard, so I kept on going upriver to where the dinosaur elk was taken yesterday, about 4 miles away. Nothing on that drive, so I headed back down river. I saw the first herd of elk pile off into the riverbed slowly, so I went upstream a half mile to where I had permission to access the riverbed from the road, then ran downstream again. I sat down and caught my breath about 100 yards from where they had hit the riverbed, then walked to that point.

I followed their tracks for about 150 yards, and then saw tan through the willows. I made my way towards them, and they never knew I was there. I crawled through the base of one willow and had a nice prone shot at the 5 bulls, and 20+ cows (3 point or better, or a cow were legal.) The big bull headed to the right where I hit him back and high on the shoulder, taking both lungs. He took a few steps while the herd ran right at me, then I saw his head tilt up, and then he just sat down and dropped. I walked up and put one more round in the neck to turn out the lights for good.

That head will look good on the wall, and some good eats as well. Thanks for sharing the story and pics. Hope that you and the boys do as well on deer.

Just finished breaking him down. Damn, elk are big, when you shoot a big one. I'll let him age a bit in the fridges, then do my final cutting. If it was November, I would have let him age hanging a bit more.

I'll wait a while until the first meal.
