Steelers Rod
      #387412 - 10/14/09 08:07 PM

So Ive been building 2 more kind of simultaneously only I had to wait for some thread for the second one. Both rods are identical except for guide ring material and wrap design so I built both handle and reel seat assemblies at the same time then proceeded with the steeler rod. I finished it up Monday.

This one was built for a rabid steeler fan freind of mine. We watched the superbowl together when the steelers "beat" the hawks and it has been a bone of contention ever since. But the dude wants a Steelers rod, he gets a Steelers rod. I just pretended it was another Vandal rod until I had to put the label on. Then I had to work hard not to vomit. I hope I dont need a license agreement since I'm not making money!

Its a SH1025 casting. Both rods will be in holders so I went with 14" rear grips and solid reel seats. I would like to do a split grip soon because I like the way they look but it doesnt seem practical on a backtrolling rod. Used the high density cork composite butt cap on these...not sure I like them. Kinda unforgiving in that if you rod bond onto them they discolor and sanding it off even with 320 grit made me nervous. They look good though.

Someday I'll figure out how to photograph a rod. Its not as easy as one might assume so my apologies for the poor photography.

I went with wider accent bands in the guide wraps to give kind of a football jersey stripe effect.

Ferrule. This is my little tribute to NFL referees. I made this wrap a little shorter than I should have just like the officials did during the superbowl in '05!

And the label that made me throw up in my mouth a little. Its really difficult to get good shots of these holographic labels. All that light bouncing around does weird things to the brains in my digital camera. This pic is kinda what it looks like, only differnt.

The second one is wrapped. Waiting for the fixative to dry on the label so I can apply it and get those wraps done and start the epoxy.

Thanks Dean.

I did a google image search and copied it. I made the label myself using holographic decal paper that has a special film on it to accept inkjet ink. Still trying to perfect that process. The inkjet film is very delicate and if I aplly too much pressure in one spot it wrinkles. And the paper is kind of spendy. I like the effect though. I've also been messing with waterslide decals a bit. Trouble is I dont have a printer that will shoot white ink so anything that looks white on the preview will just show the blank color when applied. With the holographic material anything printed in white shows he holographic pattern so the stuff I want to show up better I either leave "white" or dial up the opacity.

Sue, funny you should say that I've been looking for pink blanks. My daughter wants one. Nobody makes them in anything that we would want to fish with though. I have been looking into the process for painting a blank and its a bit involved...sanding the finish without scratching the underlying fibers then spraying new paint with a flex agent additive and applying varnish to the whole blank etc... Though I dont see you fishing with a pink blank.

Kev, the new rod is looking good. Lisa asked if I was building it for a woman. The purple and gold look very "elegant".

I have one more comissioned steelhead/salmon rod to finish up after this one and then I am going to build 2 kokanee rods on Rainshadow RDR76L E-glass blanks spiral wrapped with mini guides per Karrys' recomendation.

Nice looking rod, that being said, I hope a large bird craps on your friend while he's holding that rod!

Ron
Your looks like your getting good at that rod building stuff to bad that you had to build one like that kinda sours the whole essences of the process its all good more than likely it will fold under pressure (not because of any thing you did to it)!

When are you going to start taking orders?

I dunno. Right now its fun and I'm learning a ton. Since there are no rod builder supporters here I would consider doing some more for the cost of materials just to gain more experience. I have one such project to start next week then I have to get my broken 1143 rebuilt and then get my workshop space remodeled.

I dont want to step on any legit builders toes but I just might consider sidlining with this hobby at some point. The last time I turned a hobby into a job the fun went out of it so I'm a bit leary of going down that road again. I wouldnt mind figuring out how do do repairs too but practicing those techniques requires broken rods! Its alot easier to build new ones.

Well, 3Rivrfishr Jr. said it looks like a Crown Royal bag. So we'll just tell people thats the look we were going for!
Now, how does he know what a Crown Royal bag looks like?

Anyway, it will be ready to fish with on Monday.
