Blue chart software
      #387730 - 10/20/09 01:51 PM

I see there is a new software to read sd cards for gps. Anybody know if this is real time? With a gps puck on the laptop it makes for a big gps screen with the blue charts.

Also what are your thoughts on blue charts?

I like Blue Chart, but I haven't used the scenario you describe. Blue Chart has a method of showing where you are, so I expect it would be the same if the map was on the SD instead of the hard drive.

For example, they support using a handheld GPS to give lat/long to Blue Chart, realtime from what I remember although my desk generally doesn't move enough to register.

I am not sure about the pre loaded sd purchased cards, but I have the CD rom version that I loaded onto an sd card and use it as a back up to my HB unit w/ navionics. However, my 1st experience with the bluechart software came when I went with a friend to Neah Bay (in his boat) and I brought the handheld along to test it out. I had no clue that my buddy did not even have a compass on his boat let alone a GPS. @ hours after we launched the fog rolled in so thick you could not see 50 yards in front of you......well, me being the 'back up for my back up' kind of guy brought my handheld with the bluechart software (and also some paper charts folded up in my back pack) and we ended up fishing the rest of the day using that little bugger (60csx) and even had to give 2 boats directions back to shore because they were lost in the fog. So I guess my answer is I like the bluechart software probably even more than the Navionics, but the Navionics HB chartplotter has a much bigger screen than my handheld but I do have them both running at the same time when Im out on the boat. Im not sure the setup your talking about but it sounds similar to what a friend of mine uses on his Laptop on his comm fishing boat in bristol bay. If its the same system (however I dont think it was bluecharts) it was defintly in real time. Hope some of that helps. The only issue I could think you may have for real time would be if there is some kind of lock on the sd card for whatever machine it was designed for. I.E. the software may be able to pull the maps but may not recognize the way the particular software maps because it was designed to work with Garmin. If you are curious as to the detail of Bluecharts send me a PM and I can pull screen shots from any area you want and email them to you.

Right now I have Sea Clear II setup with a gps puck on the laptop. Downloaded maps from Noaa and hand calibrated them to work with this program. Nobeltec has a laptop version that is really sweet but its a LOT of money for the software.

NOAA has free downloadable fishing maps and nav maps but not sure how those compare to the blue charts. The new 3 d images are pretty cool looking compared to the flat maps...
so many fancy tech toys and they change so fast these days.

you got that right. The bluecharts on the higher end Garmin units have the 3d bottom contouring also. It is pretty sweet to look for sure. Using that along with downrigger tracking is a very nice tool for the electronic toolbox.
