General deer tag in Idaho
      #387797 - 10/21/09 06:07 PM

Have only got to hunt twice this year and have yet to even see a wild animal, well I have seen a couple chipmunks.
But would love some advice on some areas to check close to Boise to find a buck, does not have to be a trophy, just need meat for my family, either that or go buy a cow elk at the elk farm at Glenns ferry.

With the early high snow, I'd bet anywhere on the middle fork Boise from around twin springs down to arrowrock would be loading up. The south fork and the drainages that feed it too.

I'm with Jake on this one. If you hike a couple miles off the roads your chances of seeing something exponentially rises.

Don't hit the Northfork low, I don't know about in German or Hungarian itself but we went through Rabbit and out Edna the other day, quite a few people and not much sign. Didn't have time to get over on the Middlefork, but that's where I would have rather been.

Twice now I have went up the trail that goes up from the middle fork to trinty lakes. Beautiful country, looks like it should be full of deer, but all I have seen are lots of other hunters. Went up Swanholm creek. Went up Scott mountain, went back into the placerville area. One of the IDFG guys said to go up either Dry buck mountain above Smiths ferry or above Cottonwood ranger station towards thorn creek butte. So I have just a couple days left. Looks like I need to break open the piggy bank and go buy a cow elk in Glenns ferry elk farm. Need the meat bad this year, lost my job.

I could have saved you the trip to Scott. I live pretty much at the base of it. There will be very few deer there till the snow gets deep, then there will be far less than there should be. The Placerville area will hold more deer than 33 right now, so will all the rest of 39. Placerville and the whole basin area is brushy, so you have to watch close and usually shoot quick. I still say the middlefork. Here is a buck my buddy shot there this weekend. He's a toad.

He wouldn't score as well as that pig you shot in Nevada but he is as heavy as they get. Weird the difference between desert and mountain bucks.

I don't get too hung up on score........ I know a big buck when I see it and I'm looking at one right now! Love how he carries that mass clear out to the tips. Bucks like that killed in general hunts are about as hard a trophy to come by as there is IMO. Awesome. Thanks for posting pics.

Photoguy, take a look at the weather. Dont give up yet. These late October storms usually mean lots of tagged bucks. I'd make one more trip If I were you..........

I am doing everything I can to postpone my trip to Afghanistan (real excited) so I can get my wife out after the snow. I was going to fly out tomorrow but.... The cold weather in the last few days has made the elk move but I havn't seen the deer get out of their regular routine. I am with you, within a couple of days they will be in an all out scramble to get out of the high country.

Well went for a walk above spring shores marina tonight, seen a few deer tracks and some looked like they might have been made by a buck. Heck even got snowed on twice.

Afghanistan got put off for a few days!!!! Tonight was the first time I have seen deer on the move. Not just to feed but lined out headed towards the winter range. Even with the little snow we got, they are feeling the pressure. Find a line of moving deer, look at the last one, if there is a buck that's where he'll be, and then figure out a way to get in front of them. Good luck, sounds like you are getting out quite a bit anyway, that's what it will take when your in a new area.

Photoguy, this might be a good time to put some serious miles hiking in above Cottonwood Creek. Get away from the traffic and keep looking in and around the buck brush. Lots of deer moving makes that area money some years. Spring Shores is way too low.

I am going to head up to the area above cottonwood creek in the morning. I have hunted up there a few times and every time I hunted up there, there were still sheep in the area and have heard if there are still sheep in an area there will not be any deer. I take it I should stay below thorn creek butte

Go a bit higher, It is GO TIME right now. Slide gulch is above Arrowrock Reservoir. Higher works too. There are deer moving like crazy up there right now. This weather has them pouring out of the high country. My buddy shot a nice 4 point up there today.

Slide Gulch is the road that crossed the Middle Fork above the Campground, but below Twin Springs. It goes over to Prairie. It is a good jumping off point. You can also go farther up the Middle Fork and once the road crosses the river, start climbing toward the east.

I took a drive from Spring Shores to Atlanta today and I was amazed. First of all EVERY draw had 3 cars in it. I've seen this before but it always amazes me. Second, I can't beleive the ammount of sign coming to water. The sign I saw was not so much migrating deer, just getting a drink. From a few miles below the confluence of the north/middle forks to a few miles above it. I was hunting with my 70 year old father today and that's some steep ground, he's tough enough to do but as he says, "I'm not dumb enough to do it." That being said if I were by myself today, I would have done it. There is a major concentration of deer in that 8 or so mile stretch, find where they came down to water the night before and put on you hiking boots (don't forget you waders). We got a late start, didn't leave GV till 8:30 and we still saw 15 does from the road up there.

I am having a hard time trying to decide where to go in the morning. Hope to put some meat in the freezer tomorrow. I just need to be careful where I shoot one, having a bad back limits me big time. Thats always been the problem with unit 39, each and every draw has many hunters on it. But then unit 39 in general has alot of hunters in it.

Photoguy how did it go?

I started looking for whitetails this morning and saw nothing but two big muley bucks. Pisses me off, I've been looking for a buck for my wife and dad since the season opened here in the valley. We can't really get out and put some miles on because my dad says if you have to work that hard, it regular deer meat, not venison. He's stuck in the old days when we had a pile of deer and we shot one or five off the porch every year. I can't go far with my wife because we have the kids with us and they are still pretty little. So I have been watching about 50 does in different groups along the river waiting for a buck to show up. No buck of course until this morning since it closed yesterday. Two good 4 points less than 2 miles from my driveway standing in the road. One of them had a neck the size of a barrell but the other one was in good shape. Who in the hell gives them a copy of the regs every year?

Well I left my house at 4:30am yesterday thinking I would beat the crowd and head up to the top of cottonwood creek. Ya like everyone else had the same idea. I watched 4 deer for 2 hours, one looked like it might have had small horns, but was watching them from about 600 yards away and was not going to take the chance of it being a doe. I hunted hard, harder then my neuro surgeon would have wanted me to hunt. Got nothing, seemed like every other truck had deer in it. I think this is my last year of hunting unit 39, not enough deer and way too many people. So now I just need to scrape up $600 bucks and go buy a cow elk from that place in Glenns ferry, as I am out of a job the meat is needed badly. So does anyone have any better ideas for units for next year???? I have a year to plan it out.

If you just want deer meat, put in for a doe hunt, or get a white tail tag and put in for an extra doe hunt as well. There are tons of deer around up north, but you still have to work for them.

Check the F&G department in January or February and they will have the success numbers for each unit. You can base your hunt plans on that.

hunting outside silver city is a pretty good bet. even better if you get a doe tag. hunting pressure wasn't much to speak of according to friends who filled 2 tags a couple weeks ago. said most of the hunters they saw were in lower elevations. they used atv's to get to areas they wanted to hunt afoot. also said that they saw more bucks this year than they have in previous years.

i drew a doe tag several years ago and filling it was easy. drove up on a friday night, pitched tents just a short way outside of silver city. woke up as it was becoming light and after a short walk down a dirt road we spotted a group of 10-12 deer on a hillside and the tag was filled in no time....at the meridian meat processor by midmorning [or there abouts] as i recall.

Owyhee tags are money. Just shoot for the doe tags if meat is your goal. The big buck tags are pretty tough to fill. Don't listen to those that say it is easy to fill one of the big buck tags. They lie.
