I Just got a new rod and reel. Rod: 2 hander 13' 8 weight by reddington, reel: Ross Cl-5. with Versa tip Skagit Line by Rio. I went and fished the Deschutes with no luck last week and couldn't help but wonder what tip and/or flies to use. the line i bought has three different options. 1. floating tip, 2 sinking tip. and 3. i believe, heavy sinking tip. I used the floating line for a while with green butted skunk type flies. No Luck. is this the right pairing i wondered, plenty of good swings? Then switched to semi sinking tip with weighted flies. No Luck? I plan on fishing the Skykomish and surrounding WA rivers for steelhead a lot this winter. Any suggestion on what i should swing or drift? I watched some shows and videos and it seems like moe eggs or egg patterns are what a lot of people use? Any suggestions? I need to catch one of these things. I have tried on what is now 4 trips to no avail. getting discouraged, but love casting the stuff- 54Chief567

Chief, the standard theory is if the water is above 40, use floating lines and maybe a mid sink tip. When it gets colder, use a deep sinker or a floater with an indicator and a heavily weighted fly. I'm not sure I buy into that 100%, I would lean more to the sinking line over the floating. They are the fish of 10,000 casts when it comes to fly fishing.
When it comes to flies, I like marabou and bunny hair leeches, as well as freight trains and green butt skunks. When it comes to egg patterns, I like heavily weighted ones, because you won't see eggs floating near the surface, they roll along the bottom. In reality, I will fish either skaters (rarely hit a fish) or heavily weighted flies. I'm not much for mid level flies unless it is for early summer-runs.

Well, depends upon the time of the year. For summer runs (end of that now) use a full floating line and a 7-10 foot leader and fish just 'sub-surface. Once the sun hits the water the fish tend to go as deep as they can (section of the river dependent). Then go to a sink tip and short leader.
As for fly choice, to paraphrase Henry Ford: 'You can choose any colour you want, as long as it purple.' (Other choices may/will work at times, but for consistent 'I want their attention, stick with 'Mr P.)

thanks for all of your advice guys and yes Marty i got my account figured out now. is there any way to make it non recurring? these fush are 10000 casts or more. i have easily done 50000 and still not caught anything, but my techniques were not up to par, thanks again chief567
