Went on my first muzzleloader hunt for elk this year. Had decent weather, wish the snow would've stuck around a little longer. Never saw a spike, lots of cows and one nice 6pt. Buddy had a cow tag and filled it the 2nd day. Definitely going to keep at it though. They were still ruttin right up till we left. But the real highlight of the trip was this guy right here though...

We were sitting on some trails in this thicket, my buddy a little ways up the canyon. He starts hollering about something. I was gonna sit for another 20 minutes before I went and checked it out. Right as I'm about to get up I see some movement down this little draw about 35 yds straight below me. It's too brushy and all I see are some legs. Thought it was a deer or calf elk. Until the monster tail came through swinging right behind him.
I lost him walking through the brush. I'm sitting for another 5 minutes trying to figure out where he's at. Feel real weird, peek over my left shoulder and there he is behind a log staring at me, tail flickering behind him. We stepped it off at 11 yds.
My buddy was the one that took a pic, apparently he was coming down a trail towards him. He had it at about 20yds before he started yelling and it moved my way. Neither of us had cougar tags, neither of us hunt in WA much so we hadn't thought of it. We went back in there the next morning and cut his tracks following us down through the canyon.
The cat never spooked once, just slowly turned and walked off slow for both of us. First cat I've seen in the wild, a little close for comfort, but pretty cool nonetheless. The scenery wasn't bad either.

Spooky, they pose "little threat" you know. I'm sure she was just trying to see what kind of aftershave you use, no harm intended.

Roger that Elkman. My first time up in those woods, looking forward to next year's hunt already.
