Drop tail new
      #387645 - 10/18/09 04:48 PM

I took my Lab Lotty duck hunting yesterday. I waited until the ducks left the lake and came over the blind so Lotty had all dry retrieves on mowed grass or in the barley behind the blind. She does like to sit out in front in the lake so she can watch the air over the water. I wouldn't think the water would be very cold, but a few hours after we got home, she was hurting with Drop tail. I read Labs can get it from just wagging their tail while hunting a birds in the grass, not just from swimming in cold water.

We took today off and she is getting better now. I hope she doesn't keep getting it. She lives to hunt so she don't need that discomfort. Bill

My old lab suffered from it something horrible when it got cold. First time she had issues was a really cold day in the negative numbers and the water was in the mid 30s. Once they have it, they are much more susceptable to it...

My last lab would get it early in the season, as soon as she hunted hard 3 or 4 days in a row. Warm water and warm temps, just a lot of swimming. After a few days rest, she'd be fine till next year same time.

IMO I believe there are several things that can cause it. Trouble has had it once and it lasted for a day. I believe sore feet caused it and after a day of sleeping on my cot cured it. Next day she wasn't going 200 mph everywhere. She obeyed the speed limit for the next 23 days.

Lotty was better by Tuesday, so I took her hunting Wednesday and no problem. Hopefully it won't happen again this season. Bill

What happened on the 24th day?
