Already planning hunt 2010 new
      #388433 - 11/02/09 06:13 PM

For the Idaho guys, now I am not asking for any of your secret spots. I personally think unit 39 is over hunted.
What are some other units to consider??? I am looking at past years harvest reports on IDFG website and doing some other internet research. Mind you I don't own an ATV or horses, so all my hunting is done on foot. I am also the proud owner of a failed back surgery and nothing can ever be done to fix my back. Last year the wife and I drew doe tags for unit 39 and did not even see a deer to shoot at. I am a meat hunter, though I can honestly say it would be nice to at least once in my lifetime kill a mule deer buck with a spread of at least 20 inches. So any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can get prepared for next year.
Thanks guys

Head north of the Salmon and kill a whitetail. I lived in Moscow for 10 years and went 10 for 10 on them up there...as a poor college student for half of that time. A lot of the land isn't steep, and there are lots of animals. Won't take much research to find a productive spot.

edit: Mojo has the right info. I meant north of the clearwater, but somehow that isn't what I wrote.

Look at public lands in the Clearwater drainage or north of there. White-tails galore.

For Muleys, there are lots of places I have done well in the local area over the years. Around McCall, yep even in 39, also around Challis and Stanley and down near Glens Ferry. I'd start by scouting now for next year. You want to know where deer are now (hunting season or thereabouts).

Deer numbers are cyclic. You never know, next year there may be so many deer in the Boise River drainage we won't know what to do with them all...

39,43,48....several others in south central Idaho. General mule deer hunts are tough, point blank. Better than average bucks require effort (alot). None of that country would be very good for your back.

Whitetails by comparison are more friendly. good bucks still aren't easy though.

Next year I'm saving time and money for an Idaho whitetail.
