lots of stuff you can do with them. wish i could understand japanese, i've found some crazy videos of the stuff they do to those reels. saw a video of a guy putting a 6500C into freespool, flicking the spool, and watching it spin for about 30 seconds.

probably the best upgrade for the ABUs are to put better than factory drag washers into them. some guys love those fancy bearings, but my bushing reels(namely an old orange 5500) are my best-casting and most enjoyable to fish with.

6500's are super easy to upgrade.

Remove the factory grease and re-lube with hot sauce or equivalent.
Replace factory drag washers with composite type.
Worm gear upgrade with bearing (now it's a C4)
Replace pawl with ceramic, it will never wear out.
Optional upgrade of bearings from stock ABEC 3 to ABEC 5.
There are lots of other things you can do if your willing to spend some bucks. No real advantage for Salmon/Steelhead fishing but you can upgrade more if you want.

oh ya when i hit the switch to make a cast, if i dont pull the switch a little bit the handle just free spins and doesn't engage the spool until i wiggle the switch, any probs like that?

sounds like the gauge & disengauge parts won't slide on the back plate because of being dirty or the grease is old or to heavy.tear down clean and install light grease an don't over do.
