Forgive the fact that I may have posted this under the wrong thread please. I’m getting sick of the Skykomish system, but feel that it could be a great fishery. Folks like Lamiglass have mentioned meetings/frustrations etc. previously. But what can we do? One obvious solution would be to form a group similar to Friends of the Cowlitz. But what entity do we rattle? They have Tacoma, we would have?? I’m looking for ideas here and would be willing to join/build any grass-roots organization to restore our fishery.

I think it's all WDFW. Well, and of course, making sure that all of the sportsmen groups agree on the methods.

FOC raises fish. They split up over over how the agenda was being handled. Still around, members here, but political clout is unknown.
Being frustrated leads to action. But you must figure out the problem and the solution and then build a membership, war chest, political power. In your case, the skykomish might involve 3 legislators if youre lucky. Not a strong power base. Without dumping on anyone, Im quite familiar with the lack of individual chapter power and member involvement in that area.
There are other groups that have played a roll in that system and others who would like to. Two want to eliminate the hatchery fish. Another asked that puget sound hatchery season be cut back to the middle of February, so you wont fish for wild steelhead.
You need more than a few legislators to make a difference in department policy. PSA is now a 501C3 and so is cca. Its late in coming, but the plan for individual cca chapters was to have their own GRC to work with local DFW office and hatcheries. I dont know if the problems are in the river or out in the bay and beyond. Im guessing the bay and beyond.

Thanks for the replies to a frustrated fisherman (and post.) Is anyone in the Sky-Valley willing to meet for a beer and shoot the $hi! about our troubles? Bubba’s Road House in Sultan has good eats and drinks as well….

I'm going to assume that you are talking about the WSC, since you already said the exact same words in reference to the WSC before on a different BB...and failed to respond where you got an idea like that...perhaps you'll take the time to respond this time?
Where did you get an idea like that?

P.S. Just to answer the question for you a bit...what the WSC proposed is that on rivers where wild steelhead retention is allowed, the WSC requested that wild steelhead retention not be allowed until after February 15 to help preserve the very diminished early portion of the wild runs.

I posted an answer on that thread. I was at the meeting and so was the Twins Daddy, along with Curt and Jerry Garcia.
What a coincidence of that date. The only differential is the lack of retention on the sky system. Im not completely against this, I just think they ought to own it. Furthermore, I think Feb 15 is excessive. But since I dont target wild fish anymore, those that do, will have a smaller impact on early fish. I have an equal concern over late hatchery fish, cause the rule as stated will prohibit fishing in front of the hatchery gates and those fish will be sold to commercial harvest, or tribal or given to food banks. Oregon is selling their excess fish, whole and you must have a commercial license to buy. I called. I prefer to allow the department managers to determine the cut off dates. There are many rivers like Reiter, which you know well. February 28th is not a big issue in the final stretch. The river use to be open and just changed to selective harvest below the Sultan, until the middle or end of March. In 2006 I caught a hatchery fish from the island above Lewis street, in February. That fish would probably have been locked out and on the hunt to get laid. Now, sportsmen just bend over again, with less return on their investment.

Furthermore, tribal and nontribal nets kill hatchery and wild steelhead and some of them are lost to seals and dropout. But instead of talking to the tribes and furthering the goal of net damaged steelhead reduction, by talking to the tribes, you in particular run your one man campaign over selective harvest, cause the springer fishermen will lose allocation. The new hatchery for the Colville tribe is not a placebo for you. Its about CCA and Gary Loomis. Todd, you are a smart guy and I pay attention. But its really old and a waste of your time, to continue ranting about Gary and CCA and selective harvest on the springer fishing, when you know that the fall harvest will also benefit, along with future tribal harvest on the OP and in Puget Sound, including the Skagit. CCA will eventually wrap its arms around the ESA benefit savings on the selective harvest gear runs and they are not going to allow those benefits to be transferred to the ocean harvest, because killing the same fish in a different location is not conservation.
WSC should be talking to the tribes about leaving wild steelhead and hatchery steelhead alone. But for some reason, you want to set Gary straight.
By the way, where is your concern about the salmon fishing in puget sound? The point being we all pick our little battles. Mine and others is about selective harvest. You can either make lures and earn a living or you can go to every friggin meeting in the state. Frankly, you dont have to agree with CCA in order to benefit from it. Wild steelhead are just as important to us as they are to WSC. Being first doesnt mean ownership or we dont need help. As long as the tribes and commercials are killing steelhead, then we have work to do. Your fixation is not productive for your own goals. WE run it, not Texas.

Can I suggest a CCA vs WSC should be its own thread? Or multiples...

Yeah. Somebody start a new thread. I want to know WHY the WSC can't seem to get WSR statewide. What is it about this organization that they can't break through that "wall" of resitance?
