.17 HMR
      #389425 - 11/16/09 08:02 AM

OK...I was at the gunshop looking for another 10-22 action with which to build a "fancy stock/bull barrel/tack driver". The guy almost has me talked into putting the bull barrel and fancy stock on my existing 10-22, and adding a bull barrel stainless Savage .17 to the arsenal. What do ya'all think? What do you sight your .17 in at. 100 Yds? Can ya shoot coyotes with it? (head shots at 100 yds?) What is the trajectory if sighted in at 100 Yds? say 25, 50, 75, 150? Any thoughts on this rifle? How do you like yours???

HMR, shoots flat, hits hard, and yes will kill coyotes. I do prefer my zombie killer to go after yodel pups though.

I love mine I put a burris 4.5x14 on it and it comes with the BDC on it and they hve little stickies that have the drop ratios for a large range of bullets as well. It will kill a yote and its fun for smaller critters as well.

I've got one in a Marlin with a heavy bull. It's identical to the Savage and it shoots well. Mine is zeroed at 75 but I guess it would depend on what you expect to do with it. I've shot probably 5 coyotes with it, most in the head. I did shoot one behind the shoulder and he ran in cirles chasing his tail for about a minute and then flopped over. It's hell one rougue cats and coons around the house for sure. Since I bought it about 5 years ago, I bet I havn't put 10 shells through my .22

I have the Marlin stainless bull barrel rifle with a BSA Sweet 17 scope on it. Absolute tack driver, and I can shoot 0.5" groups with it at 100 yards.

The Sweet 17 is a BDC scope, and it works well. On a whim I set out a pop can at 175 yards, just the bottom showing. Adjusted the BDC and hit the can slightly off center.

Coyotes under 100 yards are a possibility, but instead of using the 17g v-max pills, I'd suggest using the 20 grain TNT's or FMJ's, so you woill get a bit more penetration.

Neck, chest or head.

I shoot the Hornady XTP 20 grain hollow points at coyotes. Never more than about 80 yards.

I have a 17 contender bull, absolutly love it, very accurate, mostly use it to shoot ground squirrels out the back door 60-100 yds shots, haven't had it to the range yet to see what it will really do, have shot 3 coyote with it as well! Used to use a winchester 22, the 17 is way more accurate!

Anyone do a 10/22 conversion? Is it worth it, or am I better off buying a gun specifically built as a .17?

For the 10/22 you would need a .22 mag version, not the .22LR version. There are conversion kits for a .17 mach2 (.22LR necked down), the short version of the .17 HMR (.22 mag necked down).

I converted one of my 10/22's to mach2 and have a couple 17hmr rifles. Love them both. The mach2 is just as flat shooting and deadly to 125 yards (same exact bullets in both) as the hmr. I shoot my mach2 alot though because the shells are much cheaper. $4 to $5 bucks vs. $10 for the hmr. Many Montana pigs die every year from either one.
Also alot from my 5mm's though too.

How hard is it to find Mach2 bullets? This sounds like a good interim step.

Bi-Mart has some good sales at times.
Natchezss.com if you buy 10 at a time will have sales often.
I bought some from Sportsman's Guide last spring on sale.
I just buy up when the price is good.
I like Hornady myself, but there are lots of brands.
If you just want a box or two most local stores have them for 6 to 7 bucks, all the time.
I basically looked at it as the shell savings paid for the hvy. barrel, new weight/spring on bolt and killer camo thumbhole stock in a short time.

The best part about Hornady, CCI, and Federal ammo is they are all mae for the most part here in lewiston at CCI/SPEER

But I still like the Hornady plus they are the cheapest out of all three that I have found.

Had no issues finding pills, either in .17HMR or .17Mach2.
