Just bought a pontoon, need some rivers to go down.
      #389477 - 11/16/09 05:48 PM

Creek company has all their boats at half off from the factory right now, my buddy and I picked up a couple 9 footers. Now we just need some rivers to go down. any recomendations?

I was thinking of floating the north fork of the stilly when it opens, has anyone ever done this?

Thanks

Dont pile on a lot of gear. Good chance you may walk around a few log jams.

You might want to run google earth and take a look.

Cowlitz from BC to Mission isnt bad. Chehalis from Oakville to Satsop or Satsop to Monte.

I have been floating the north fork of the stilly for a few years now with my 9 foot creek company pontoon. I like to put in at C-post and float down to the river access off the Oso loop road. The river has a lot of boulders in this area especially around the Whitman Bridge. So many at times that bumping into them is inevitable (no big deal). The log jams have never been problematic. There are a few spots where the river runs a little fast but these sections are short and easy to navigate. There are some excellent holes in this section of river that can only be accessed by pontoon.

I would say for starters maybe try the lower section of the river because it is a little tamer (if you have never floated before). On your second float you would be in a position to hit up C-post down.

One time a buddy and I put are pontoons in at Fortson and floated down to the Whitman Bridge, holy cow!!!! What an amazing float, hands down the most beautiful river I have ever fished. Navigating this section of the river was a bit interesting to say the least. We had to walk around a few gnarly rapids and a log jam. I would recommend this float to anyone who likes a committing adventure and has a good eye for avoiding danger.

If you want any more information on the NF of the Stilly PM me I can tell you anything you need to know.

Start with simple river to get an idea of how the pontoon handles. N fork Lewis, Cow, lower Kalama come to mind.

Lawdog, a good river doesnt exist in Puget Sound. However, none of them will give you trouble if you have rowing skills. Plan on fishing from shore. No anchor is necessary or recommended. Get a 1/4 rope and tie yourself to the toon. The length is up to you. Always face the danger and row slightly down river and away from the danger.
Beach the boat and fish. You can also let it float beside you, while you walk down the drift.

Id offer to tag along but I cant rely on my weekend schedule let alone during the week. If you are alone, drift boaters with two guys are your best best to hitch a ride back up, while the second guy watches your gear. Dont forget your wallet and keys. Ive never had to pay. The one time I floated the upper sky, I had to wait about three hours to find a guy, I could get a ride with. Few boats.
Make friends early and dont fall behind to far behind the other boats. You need these guys, more than they need you. Act accordingly. This is chum season. I know half the fun is the ride, youve never been on. Best scenery outside of the mustang ranch.

When LB says 'always face the danger' he is refering to always keep the front of the boat pointed at what you want to stay away from so you can 'row away' from it as you get closer. (just to clarify LB) And yes...1st floats in new water are my favorite!

Whoa, ask and thow shall recive! I guess I should have been a little more specific in my question.... I have experience on a pontoon, just need some rivers that would be good to float and hit hole to hole. Thanks for all the extra info though. Never hurts to be safe!

No kidding, it will be interesting to see how much more the water comes up in that area with this next push of wind and rain.
