Hello all, I am going to Hells Canyon tomorrow and the day after to do a little fishing for steel, I will have to resort to fishing from the bank as usual. I usually go below the dam on the Idaho side, its usually limited space (first come basis) does anybody know of any other access to the river on Idaho side to fish from the bank. I still haven't hooked one up a Hells but i keep trying. I usually prefer to use spinners, spoons, and jigs they work well on most other places. Any tips or thought are greatly appreciated.

Are you going to be fishing below the dam or heller bar or where?

The hike downriver is a killer. You have to take off on that trail way above the dam, and go around all the cliffs.
I'd pay for the Oregon license as it opens up a bunch of water for you. Either that or pay someone to drop you downriver a ways and pick you up later. I know some guides will do that for you...

The guys on the Oregon side are doing well.....can be combat fishing though. Joe is right...the walk down on the Idaho side is brutal.

thanks for all the tips guys. I ended up buying an oregon license for the day and was glad i did. i got alot of trout and only had a steelie on for a few but lost him just as fast as i had him. I keep thinking i should rethink using spoons since i always see the guys with bait doing way better. I was totally unprepared for how strong the currents were and they were causing my spoons to 'push' up and couldn't fish them effectively. It was a pathetic sight, i was throwing everything i had at them, i had been releasing all the trout, thinking i might get a steelie, and when i was ready to go home empty handed i regretted throwing the trout back, hahaha. well it was a good learning experience and i did get to see some nice country and wildlife. I did travel a ways down the river and see alot of good potential water, i might even bring my flyrod next time.
