What is the best AR-15? new
      #389799 - 11/19/09 09:12 PM

I know that this is a general question that can have a multitude of different answers, but here goes. My neighbor and I were talking about which brand of AR he should buy. He specifically wanted to know what the top three over the counter brands were without doing any custom mods. He is just looking for a good quality plinker that he will not have any issues with. This will be a .223 AR. These were my top three picks:

1. Colt
2. Bushmaster
3. Rock River

Even though I own an Oly Arms and am very happy with this weapon without any problems, I think that the above mentioned make a better product. What say you all?

Colt is overpriced.

Bushmaster is good.

RRA is a good value for the money, and I own a lot of their parts.

Nothing bad to say about Oly, other than their finishes. Their rifles can kill flies at 100+ yards.

All of those rifles are quality rifles, but you will pay different prices for each. That being said, if he buys a lower, a LPK, and a stock he likes, I can help him assemble it for a great savings, and then he can choose the upper of his liking and get a reliable rifle at a lower cost.

Literally, it takes 20-30 minutes to assemble a lower if you do it slowly. Then he can purchase an assembled upper of his choosing and configuration.

From what I understand about Colt is they have different pin sizes for some parts to prevent interchangeability. I don't know if that is still true. I think Bushmaster is hard to beat.

The best AR is the one you're holding.

I think Colt is still that way re:pins.

I have a POF 416 Gen2 lower on my .458. The workmanship of the POF was worth the extra $100, IMO, at the time I bought mine from Rainier Arms.

They also have an intergrated solid trigger guard, so there is no reason to buy a magpul or other aftermarket guard. I never have like that flat bar guard. Just doesn't look right.

M4 Chart

I looked here & went with LMT's. Just picked up my new LMT MRP Piston rifle about a month ago.

According to the chart the BCM's are the same as a Colt & cheaper.

I agree with Tony the best AR is the one in my hands!

Quantico Arms

Quantico Arms in Lakewood (south of Tacoma) has Smith & Wesson M&P15's on sale for $750 on Friday. These are the flat top upper type.

That is a great price for that weapon, I am sure that the neighbor will have one of those in his safe before the end of the weekend.
