Flyrod Components new
      #40172 - 07/28/01 08:58 AM

Whew! Suffering from a mild case of sticker shock here, Marty! I've been shopping at several sites for components to finish that GL3. I changed my mind, and decided to go with more custom components, rather than just trying to recreate a Loomis factory rod. So, I've been looking at nickel silver skeleton reel seats, exotic wood inlays, fighting butts, high grade corks, and all the bells and whistles. Pretty easy to dump another hundred bucks or more into this project! I'm thinking that I'll probably get the corks and guides, and wrap the rod, and then order the reel seat later, to kind of spread out the cost a little. I've checked out REC and Anglers Workshop, and I like the REC reel seats the best. I'm really gonna have a one of a kind when I get finished!

I'm really looking forward to getting started on this project. I've re-wrapped a few rods, but this will be my first one from the ground up. There's a LOT of info on the web, too. Have you heard of a place called "Mudhole"? They've got a nice selection of components, with some real deals on rod blanks (including blemished Lamiglas blanks). I'm gonna have to build a rod rack now, I see it coming!

Greg,

The best place for fly rod components is http://www.hookhack.com Look at their specials page and they usually (I've never seen them not have it) have 20% everything in the store. Lots of the Pac-Bay blanks get to 30-40% off.

I like hookhack but I usually go to the local fly shop for fly rod components. Just like to support Ben at Quality Fly fishing because he's a good guy.

BTW, Ben's website is http://www.fishnfly.com It's a weak website, but if you want to ask him about fly rod components just call him; he builds lots of rods.

Pepper, thanks for the tip on H&H. I got the OK from the household banker and ordered my components this morning, and with the 20% discount wound up costing me about 80 bucks. I bought one of the mid-priced Struble reelseats with a tiger-striped maple inlay, fighting butt, nice corks, and all titanium-carbide singlefoot guides/tip/hook keeper. Should look really nice on the GL3, with the dark blue/gray wraps I'm planning on. Marty, can't wait to get started, REALLY looking forward to next Saturday!

Sounds like you are going to have a sweet rod once you are done. Good luck building it!

Hey Marty and Pepper, got her all finished last night, and she looks pretty sweet! GL3 blank, Struble uplocking reelseat with tiger maple inlay, titanium carbide guides, hookeeper, and top, removable fighting butt, and red wraps with no color preserver...came out a deep cranberry red. Now, to get hooked up with a steelhead (or silver, whichever happens to come first) [tailwalk] I stopped by Sportco in Fife the other day, Okuma now has a nice large-arbor reel with a SUPER smooth drag that will soon be attached to this rod.
