Ok here is the basic concept of the metal rod reamer.
I can see a problem already..length should be longer than the handle especially on the front end.
But the taper is the important to maintain to keep soft spots out of the handle.
Should this thing be fluted to allow material to come out? or is that to hard to add. I think it is needed to maintain the cutting. I was thinking it could be knurled first to get the cutting surface then fluted afterwards? Looking for function here...ideas?
I will start measuring the rods to check the specs if this looks feasible. [ 01-06-2002: Message edited by: Marty ]

Marty, one of the guys that posts on the rodbuilding.org forum suggested using a large rat-tailed file chucked in a variable speed drill. Run the drill in reverse, so the spiral pattern on the file will pull the cork dust/chips out of the hole instead of packing them in tighter. Just a thought, and one I'll be trying soon! Rat tail is great if they made the size we need to do a bunch of rods. This is the next step beyond using a fiber glass rod with grit glued down.Sounds like you will find the rattail short comings real soon.

These things actually exist!!! I saw one today when I toured the Rain Shadow Facilities. They are used by the manufacturers...I knew somebody must have them. Well one problem....they are for the manufacturers made by the spindle makers.
Just gotta get me a couple of these.
Btw they look exactly like I diagramed above. The course material is a hard metal points like velcro only metal. Very cool ![[Smile]](images/icons/smile.gif)

Marty it's probably carbide, bonded (welded?) to the body of the reamer. High-speed power woodcarving bits are made the same way. Pricey, too!
