Decorative weaves

Anyone here tried making any of the decorative weaves like putting a steelie design on the butt, etc.?

Haven't progressed that far yet! Some of the suppliers have some very nice looking fish decals that you can apply to the rods to personalize them, also.

We do some of the simple stuff like a fan weave, ray design, or a simple metalic thread include.

I don't really like the looks of the ones I have seen , but with some nicer metalic thread you could probably create a quality looking fish.

Need to plan it out on paper like a cross stitch design.

On weaving...do you know whether each cross thread is wrapper over, under or whether the cross thread (design) spans multiple threads..

This is the kind of weave I'd like to ultimately figure out, but would be thrilled to get a more basic one like this

Any ideas of how they are doing these? I saw some nice ones at the sportsmans show that really did have high quality...

Those are beautiful wraps!! They are done with a combination of over lays and the thread allowed to stay on top depending on where they are in the design.

The fish is done like a simple letter graphing technique and the fancy weave is done with a mutiple wrapping of threads.

That is some fabulous work. Thanks for sharing the pictures....blown away by the effort somebody put in on those.

I broke down today and bought a beautiful expensive book with lots of diagrams, etc. It will take some study and practice to say the least and now I have to build (or buy)a few items. But what a great time of year to do things like this...I just built a basic cork turner, and now I want to build a custom rod wrapper. I wish my tools were easier to get to and set up for short projects like this...a man really needs a large workshop! I'm beginning to get a feel for what to do, but it is more complicated than I originally thought.

Roe let us know how the book works out for you and its name. I don't have much in the way of wrapping books in my library. Use to check them out at the library when I was starting out building rods. There are more and more good resources on this subject coming out.

Almost done building the rod wrapper. It is looking pretty sweet, not fancy wood or anything, but the design is good, with spring arm tensioners that let you undo overwraps without having to stop what you are doing and resetting things up. I still have to add the thread tensioners and spring arms Need to find about 3 feet of thin spring wire. The book i bought is Custom Thread Art by Dale Clemens. It is very detailed and complex. It is going to take a while to digest the material. But there is a hundred complex patterns to be made.

Dale Clemens has two books out, one shows some patterns and explains how do some of them. the other (can't remember what the name is, and it is at home) has only patterns and there are some really complex ones. Both are great books.

I just ordered one of Mr. Clemens' books from Amazon.com...it's called "Advanced Custom Rodbuilding". I checked one of his earlier books (Fiberglass Rod Building) from our library last week, and was impressed enough to order the newer one. I don't know which I enjoy more, the actual rodbuilding, or the tinkering around with jigs, fixtures, and tools!

I sure have to admit to having enjoyed the tinkering with the making of the rod wrapper and the cork turner. I just got the drier motors from allselectric (site from Gregs post) and now just need to figure how to attach a rod chuck to the motors. I solved the wire tensioner for the wrapper with music wire at Mclendons hardware. I basically copied a Sullys wrapper setup and it is so very easy to use it ought to be illegal. I went down to Schoffs tackle and they have just about every wrapper known to man there and several power wrappers set up. I was asking them what they use and they said the Sullys there get all the use and I see why. It is about impossible to not get a perfect wrap. As soon as some $ come in, I'll have to get hunting some new blanks.
