i am building a rainshadow 9000 plug rod,and i reamed out a little to much of the top part of the bottom handle,can i build it up with a couple wraps of masking tape before i glue it or should i get a new bottom handle?

I did exactly that on my first rod.I put masking tape there and it seems to be fine.I have abused the rod and it is still holding well.
