Nothing quite as exciting as having a big bull bugling and headed your way....time is coming near.

I had one that would push his cows away from me but would bugle at me. So I extrapolated where he would be (was in heavy cover) and it was getting dark so I literally ran to the zone...and cow called. HOLY CRAP!! it was close...but I had no idea where it was and my setup was totally exposed since I was trying to get into his circle. With the swirling wind I never heard a stick break or saw him. Fun with no shots fired

Well, saw elk, chased elk, elk gave me the finger and ran over the mountain. Seriously, bugled up a smallish 6x6 Saturday morning, but he would come no closer than about 75 yards. Sunday, had sattelite bulls all over me (two point at 12 yards broadside) but no shooters...all 2 points and spikes. Had to come back to town to work this week, taking off Friday to hunt the last week of season. Saturday morning saw 3 bear, 2 blacktails, and 14 elk in the same clearcut! Passed on a pretty nice 3x3 blacktail (in the velvet)...bull was 150 yards away when the deer walked by! Greg

No meat yet but is sounds like a sucessful hunt...learn something new everytime you get close to them critters. When you were bugling were you alone? or the setup guy? They know where they should see a bull and won't come in if they don't see one hanging up at about the distance you described. Best setup is to put the bugler behind you by 30 yards so they are looking back there and it will put you in range. I have found it hard to bugle them close by myself.

That was definitely the problem, I was going solo that day. Have had the same problem at times with turkeys, solved that one with a decoy. Don't really want to carry an elk decoy around, just have to try to get a better setup next time. At least I didn't spook them, just hope they are still in the county when I get back there Saturday. Don't know if it will help but one of the tricks when in that situation is to point the tube away from the elk and try to make it sound like your farther away.Sounds like I could sell you a big elk decoy if I would fit in a fanny pack

Yeah, I guess I'll just have to design one myself! I tried bugling the opposite direction, also tried shaking a small alder to try to give him the impression that something was there...but he didn't totally buy it. Got him P.O.'d enough to come ALMOST all the way across the clearcut, just stopped a few yards shy of shooting distance. On the range, I can hit a pop can at 60 yards, but don't care to shoot that far at game. Too much can happen in the 3/4 second it takes an arrow to travel that far! Greg
