With Elk season upon us it would be interesting to hear your opinions on what sounds the elk make.Bulls (chirp, chuckle, bugle, bark) These all are a little different. The chuckle seems to be a nomal response to a cow call saying "over here". I have heard the chirp as a response to say "I am coming". A bark is the alert sound "gonna run".
Of course the bugle seems to be the proud announcement of I have a woman or want one baddd. I think the key to the elk herd is the cow calls..after all she runs the heard and he keeps them in line. Bulls always at the rear of the moving herd. What are the noises of the cow elk???? meuw, bark, calf squeel (this will hold up the herd)

I just purchased a outside the mouth style of cow call. It does a nice job of making the correct sound with a little practice. Please don't shoot me if you hear me coming 
This one is made by Woods wise products and called Hyper Hot. It also has what is called a mute plug which adds a extra raspiness to the call. I would recommend this call for cow and herd noises. ![[Bugling Bull]](graemlins/bugle.GIF) [ 09-14-2001: Message edited by: Marty ]

Another call that has worked well for me is the Primos lead cow call. It's one of the "bite and blow" type that is easy to work. I also blew up my favorite diaphragm the first days of this season, and had to fall back on my Primos hyperlip bugle. Hard to get a good chuckle (at least for me) but is a very realistic satelite bull bugle. I can make a reasonable "whistling chuckle" with it, but can't get that deep, throaty growling chuckle that says "I'm gonna kick your butt and take your cows" that you can get with a triple reed diaphragm and grunt tube.

I haven't seen any out side the mouth call that does that deep chuckle. I have seen bedded bulls use the chuckle to say over here. This response was always to a cow call.

I've heard that "get over here!" chuckle too, but a lot of the bulls over here start a real deep, agressive, throaty chuckle when they get mad enough to come in. Sometimes they start with a loud, single note bugle (almost a scream) and end with a series of chuckles. Almost always means they're coming. Sometimes a chuckle is all it takes to start them up, too. I've been after one bull that we named "Laughing Boy" because in 5 or 6 encounters over 2 seasons, he has NEVER bugled. But man, can this guy chuckle!

According to WDFW, they're rocky mountain elk...east of I-5 (by about 20 miles, we hunt the St. Helens herd). But a lot of the bulls look like Roosevelts (Short, VERY heavy antlers, top points palmated). But in reality, they're probably all crossed up here, and exhibit characteristics of both sub-species.
