Patterning Blacktail bucks new
      #40661 - 09/14/01 04:29 PM

When scouting blacktail deer do you pattern their habits? The bucks seem to be extremely nocturnal...anybody else ever notice this?
What is good blacktail habitat? Is it dense woods, thickets of vine maple or fern fields. Should water be part of the equation or is there ample everywhere. How do you determine your blacktail travel routes?

Bux I saw the two point again after I dropped you off after fishing.... It was headed East. If you start at Idaho and head west your bound to run into it. I can't believe you haven't seen it yet.

I hunt all sorts of terrain, but where I see the most big bucks is at a transition zone between large forest and reprod/clearcuts. I ride my bike on these scouting trips, and have found that the first hour of light at daybreak and last hour before sunset are the best for finding them out in the open.

I have some 7x50 binos that really gather in the light, and they are steadier than some of the higher power models, so they come in handy for spotting the big guys in low light.

My group has regularly taken at least one big deer (3-point w/ eyeguards or bigger) a season for the past four years by hitting the big woods. These are mature sections of forest next to clearcuts. We find many more of these big guys will hole up in these areas. Look for tall trees with ferns below. The ferns supply many good hiding places for the big ones to bed down in.

Getting into these sections of forest can be hard at first, but once inside you will find many deer trails. The light is low in there, so you should wait until an hour after sun-up to hit it.

We only use open sights on our rifles when hunting these areas, as some shots are taken while the deer is in motion.

We will hit an area with at least 4 hunters, and up to 6, with a blockers at the edges of the timber as we move down. Go slow, and you will jump more deer. We also communicate by radio for safety.

Marty, you know that my eyes are closed when I drive, right? I have to admit that I have not seen it yet.

My general blacktail hunt would start with a few good clearcuts in the A.M. and then head to the timber for the day. Then glass a clearcut for an hour before dark.

A interesting observation made in the Blacktail book I just got. Blacktail and wind direction...Blactails use the wind at their back and enter clearcuts using their eye sight. So if you apply that to watching cuts...WATCH THE SIDE Where the wind it coming from.

Marty I agree with you're observation,a lot of Bucks tend to rely on eye site when entering a clear-cut,but they don't stick around for long...Os

Marty a great book on Blacktail hunting is "Blacktail Trophy Tactics by Boyd Iverson" Some great tips and views. I have had my best success hunting close to real brushy areas or even in them but moving through vine maple and reprod forest isnt easy without making noise. The real big guys are very nocturnal and dont stick around out in the open for to long. But can be hunted especialy later in season. I killed my biggest buck on Halloween a few years back and it was a perfect blacktail day wind and heavy rain, I love it when the weather turns that way or even better would be snow. He was a nice heavy beemed 4x5 with nice long eye gaurds.Blacktails are my favorite to hunt because it takes some reall hunting skill to ge t close, I hunted east side this year but will go back to west next year because I liek the longer season on this side of the Mt. Read boyds book and lets us know how your hunt goes.
