Rock Identification new
      #40999 - 01/21/02 11:04 AM

I found some white rocks with quartz mixed all through it on the river bank. Would this be worth the time of cutting and polishing Or should I just walk past this type of material.

Hard to tell without seeing it, but if the quartz nodes are big enough they would probably polish nicely. If the rock is kind of crumbly I wouldn't waste my time as the rock needs to have enough hardness to polish up. Since it takes so much time to polish rocks it is probably better well spent on rocks that you know are going to have a chance.

On the other hand, if you are going to do a batch anyway it would hurt to throw in some of those pieces just to see what will happen.

I just moved some of my agates to step two and had to keep some of them in the first step (coarse grinding). This is my first time so I hope I am judging correctly what needs more time in the tumbler and what doesn't. My problem is that I have a lot of big, big agates that won't fit in our size tumbler and I can't bring myself to break them into smaller pieces.

I guess I need to drag it off to the rock shop and see what they think. Would be good to get some more ignorance rubbed off me too [Smile]

I am truly a rockiot
