Excellent! Nice job on the waterfowl. Any pheasants in that thick grassy stuff?

I see a fishing pole, any bass in that slough?

There are a couple Pheasant that escape a nearby refuge but you can only shoot waterfowl here which sucks because the Doves swarm like bees.

I use that pole to retrieve ducks that land in water too deep to wade because I don't own a dog, but this is actually the mouth of the Guadalupe River which holds a diminishing population of Chinook Salmon and Steelhead, as well as Sturgeon. I think it's closed even for C&R.

My game animal bucket list is getting shorter thanks to yesterday's hunt.

The Guadalupe - doesn't that run by the San Jose airport? I worked for a company that was based in San Jose, used to fly in there a lot, hard to believe that ditch could hold slamon and steelhead, but maybe I'm thinking of the wrong river.

Seems like they had some remnant runs of salmon and steelies in the streams that come out of the Santa Cruz mountains, but they were basically on like support.

Yup, that's the one. Upstream it looks identical to the upper Samish River. Down low, looks just like the lower Samish River. Both rivers hold fish. Unfortunately there are very VERY few of them anymore, with all the homeless people netting them with shopping carts and garbage and habitat loss. About 20+ years ago we would drop nightcrawlers into it and hook into these monster 30"+ trout that I now know were Steelhead. Probably only a dozen that come up every year if that. They are one spring flood or pollutant spill away from extinction. Sad...

I only mount game I can eat before I put on the wall. I feel like its a waste to shoot it just to use it for decoration. But that's just me.
