crossbow hunting help new
      #421896 - 06/10/12 04:44 PM

Caveman has received his disabled hunter approval back from WDFW and he's now waiting on crossbow approval after submitting forms that his doctor filled out. Assuming it's also approved, he'll need to get outfitted.

We haven't tried Cabela's yet, but does anyone know any stores that have experience with outfitting disabled hunters with said crossbow?

Their Accudraw system looks the easiest plus you can operate it with a cordless drill.

So, it appears Mike bought a crossbow today. It's coming from another store. It's a TenPoint.

We went out for breakfast at Suzann's (Mike had something called a Sasquatch Omelet, OMG!) and afterward, decided to drive to Cabela's.

When we got upstairs, low and behold, there was his buddy and his two adult kids, inspecting the crossbows! This is the guy Mike will be hunting with. What a coinkydink! It was not planned and this was his buddy's first ever visit to Cabela's!

His buddy is also disabled. He was hit hit broadside by a pickup truck (woman lighting cigarette and talking on cell phone) and his right shoulder was crushed. He has very limited use...

So, after spending an hour and a half talking to Cabela's crossbow/disabled hunter specialist, both Mike and his buddy decided on one that was lightest in weight, can have the scope removed and a pin sight added, and has a winch thingy for cranking. They only had one in stock and since his buddy's kids were helping to pay for his, he got it and we'll wait for the other to come in.

What a weird day!

I found a link for the one Mike has coming.

Well... it appears these crossbows are pretty impressive. Mike and his buddy spent yesterday siting them in again, (after removing the scope and adding the pin sights). Once they had what they called "repeatable results", they walked our property and a couple of others they had permission to hunt. Turns out our property had the most sign. (I feed them well with my ornamental shrubs and trees, not by choice!) The game camera also showed the most activity here.

So, now the game camera is aimed at the "chosen spot" and the "blind" is in place... 3 days and counting.

Did I mention how deadly accurate these things are?

Mike just shot a forked horn. Came into the house to get his tag and the truck and left again... I guess I won't be canning pears and making more salsa.

It's not very big, but it's one less garden/orchard thief.

He might be trading the red one straight across to his buddy who needs a one ton for hauling his dump trailer/tractor around for a 3/4 ton with the same 7.3 diesel but a crew cab.

The white one will be for camper/boat trips.

FYI, reading the regs a few months back... it appears anyone can hunt with a crossbow now in areas closed to modern firearm but open for bow and muzzleloader seasons.

Pretty sure that means me too, if/when I hunt here at home, which I probably will be required to do because the Hubby will be hunting on the other side of the Cascades on the 40 acres we bought over in the Cowiche Unit. Yea, I guess?
