I have 78 shortbed 4x4 with dual shocks (factory)and a C-6 behind a 400. Problem is my motor is starting to get tried and I'm thinkin of going in another direction, perhaps a built 302,I'd have to change trannies. a big block maybe 460 or a 390. I don't tow much, just hunt and fish. anyone have a idea, that won't cost me an arm and a leg.
Oh BTW don't say buy a Chevy,I tried that once......once ...thanks Os [ 10-28-2002, 11:37 AM: Message edited by: Osprey ]

You gotta love Fords! I tried a chevy once also, I will never go back. If you decide to go with the 302 and want to build it yourself, I have a couple blocks, heads, and manifolds you can have real cheap. I mean cheap! good luck on the project.

Thanks Bux I'm really torn between the 302 and a big block. What years are you're blocks? are the maniflods stock? I'd really like to add fuel injection if I go with the 302,maybe one out of a newer mustang, just don't want all the puter crap,so I'll probably stay with a carb.
First things first,I need to change out the steering wheel .....she's hammered. I got an catalog thru www.lmctruck.com they carry a ton of great hard to find parts. I don't want to go with the stock wheel,I know an old three spoke out of a mustangII or capri will fit also,(did it in my old 76 1 ton)
keep the faith............Os

O's,
I would stay away from a 302. I'd rather have a 300 six before a 302. Stay with the big block. Besides your fuel mileage will be about the same and you'll have more power.
My 2 cents.

Dog the 300 six is Ok,but I feel I can build a pretty healthy 302.If I had my choice I'd go for a built 390 over the 460,just because my truck is a short bed 1/2 ton,I just don't need all that horse power.heck if I wanted shear horses,A buddy of mine has a 428 police interceptor that would do the trick..he did offer it thanks..Os

O's I had a 302 boss motor years ago in a truck..It was BUILT and had plenty of ponies...But I will have to say better to go with the big block since you would have to change trannie out to change...390 or 360 has lots of power stock for a fishin rig and will outlast the built motor...The millage would be close to the same too... O's Probably the most inexpensive way to go is to stay with the same motor set-up you have. The other option would be to go with a 351M same block as the 400. Anytime you start changing from one motor size to another you will most likely have to change motor mount positioning which can be a real pain. And if you went with a big block it would also be necessary to change out radiators and who knows what else.
Price for a long block 351M or 400 is $1195.00 with a $350.00 core charge. If your core is good you get the $350.00 back. This price is thru NAPA
P.S. Rember the KISS factor
Good luck

Hi Osprey,
I wouldn't step down to a 302, nice engine but it would take a lot of work to install from your current 400, same issue's with a 390. And moving up to a 429/460 would be great because they bolt up to the C6 perfectly, but the rest of the conversion is in the $500 to $1000 ballpark. I would stick with the 400 and put a mild (rv) cam and a 4 barrel (Edelbrock, Carter). That should yield you about 250 hp and a ton of torque as well as a very reliable engine. I have a 78 Bronco with a rebuilt 400 (stepped up from a 351M, same engine but .5" shorter stroke) and I love it. It is getting a little tired and considered a 460 but will stay with the 400. Gary

300 straight six. Its the perfect motor for that pickup unless you want/need lots of horsepower. They can be built pretty strong, a 390cfm four barrel, header and a cam and youll be set. More usable torque for a pickup than a 302, and better milage, better life too. The 351M/400M are good motors for power, if you put in a new can, and exhuast, but milage sucks. I have a 30 horse 351M in my 79 shortbed, and if i had my choice, id get the 300 six instead. 7 mpg makes it too expensive to drive.

The six is out of the question.....
Thanks Caveman,I assumed for torque the 460 (same block as 429)with the longer stroke would make a better truck engine, considering the mileage would be about the same.
Just found last night my neighbor is bulding a 351 Cleveland Cobra Jet for 70 a Mach 1#.The "Stang" still has the original 302(not a boss)which I can pick up easy.
I'm trying to improve my mileage mostly.

The only wise choice is the 460 I have 460's in both my fords, 80 Bronco and 95 Bronco.
A 390 will NOT compare to a 460
