Feeding Ospreys
      #45358 - 06/23/01 05:13 PM

I took the little mini drifter to see how it handles and what I need to change before charging down the river. Lake Aldwell was the choice so I could row into the slower portions of the river too. On the way back to the boat ramp two ospreys were trying to catch trout. They hit the water about 10 times with no luck. I had never see two working for fish together before. What a really cool sight to watch. They fished for about 15 minutes hovering and diving. They are strong flyers to pull themselves back out of the water so easily, shake like a dog and do it all over again.

Marty, we really get a kick out of watching the ospreys, too. We see them all the time down on the Cowlitz. The funniest thing I've seen in a while was last weekend. We were heading back up the river towards Blue Creek, and noticed something flopping in the water on the shallow side of the river. When we got closer, it was a bald eagle, swimming/walking/lurching towards shore. We didn't see what had happened, and could only guess that he had caught a fish too large to fly with, and throttled the boat down to see if he was going to make it to shore. Sure enough, he did, and dragged what looked like a 5 pound sucker out with him! Never seen a baldie go all the way in the drink for his fish before, they usually just snatch them from near the surface. Sure wish we had the video camera with us that time!

Thats a good one. He wasn't going to let go for any reason. Would have loved the camera today also.

Come and fish the Chehalis with us this winter. We have the eagles trained down there; we fed them squawfish all last winter, and now they follow Don's boat where ever we go. It's really neat to toss a fish out in a riffle and watch them fly 20 feet over your head and pluck it out of the river.
