My daughter loves feeding the blue jays in the bark yard and I have noticed that there appear to be two distinctly different birds that come in to eat. One looks like and sounds like the regular camprobber types you see in the mountains. The other one and the one I wonder about is slightly larger and has no crest on its head. It's a greedy bugger and very aggressive towards the other birds and even dives on the squirrels if they come to the feast. My question is this. Is this a different type of bird or mearly a female of the same species?

Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds shows the scrub jay in your area. It says it is paler than the Steller's jay and states that it is crestless. I've never seen a bird like that around here. We do get a number of Steller Jays at the bird feeder, though. They're quite entertaining.

I get numerous Stellar Jays at my camping property (machias) ... Lake Stevens/Granite Falls areas.
I know what you mean, the squirells dont have a chance.
