Last year I found some growing right on the side of the road late in the winter. They are parasitic on russula spp. (and milkcaps). I've seen lots of russula growing in dry kinds of places without a lot of ground cover, like the side of the road. So maybe in a drier kind of place? It would be great to hear where and when others have found them. The one thing that is kind of worrisome about them is how do you know that the mushroom they've attacked was a good one? Has anyone ever heard of someone getting sick from them?

I've tried Lobsters several times and had no problems,,,,,one thing I do look for is unparasitized russulas or milkycaps nearby as an indication of which may be parasitized. Also try a very small taste of it first.....most of the bad milky caps and russulas will have a disagreeable taste....peppery or burning.
