Anybody chase mushrooms in the winter or is it just to cold. I have been seeing lots of mushrooms showing along the river banks (nonedible) and my brother had a shaggy mane pop up in his yard last week.

We usually pick the " Chantrelle" variety while hunting but had a poor season due to the dry climate. Spring's around the corner so we'll try again then. Anybody Know of any hotspots for the Chantrelles?

Looking for mushrooms sounds like fun. I have about four or five different kinds growing in my yard. The only problem is all the things I have heard about people getting sick eating the wrong kinds. I had friends who looked for the "magic" kind, but I thought they were nuts eating something they didn't know 100% what they were. I should sign up for one of those one day classes to help identify them.

Christopher I highly recommend you taking one of those classes. I have found some real baddies growing in urban and suburban yards. Learn the basic good ones and all of the bad ones. Also realize that some are edible for most folks but for some reason have some toxic effects on some people. Good hunting!

Very important to learn to PROPERLY identify mushruooms. YOU SHOULD NEVER TRY WITH OUT KNOWING!!! Not only will some make you sick!! Some will flat kill you!!
Once you learn the proper ways to identify them there is safe methods to cooking, and eating them.
The woods are full of good ones but they are also full of the killer ones too. It is fun knowing the difference.

where can I find out about these one day classes? Or should i just get some books from the library seeing as I'm flat broke and unemployed?

Chovie d. Look through the books and you will find that for every good one there is one almost identical that will ruin your day, week, etc. Untill someone shows me a foolproof way (and I do want to learn) of identification I'll hunt mine at the grocery store.

The library usually has information or classes offered by different societies that can help you get started. There are a lot of mushrooms in the woods... being able to identify a few properly is how we hunt. The rest get to stay put or get the foot. ![[Smile]](images/icons/smile.gif)
some of the books are designed to help you follow a flow chart to determine the mushroom. These are them most helpful when getting started.
