What's your reel? new
      #36 - 12/14/99 10:34 PM

Howdy,
What kind of reels do you folks fish with for steelhead. I use a shimano bantam 1000plus. The main reason I use this real is because of the direct drive switch and line holding capacity.

I recently purchased a casting reel from Bass Pro Shops. Pro Qualifier XPS. Casts smooth and far.but I don't know how it performs on fish...I haven't hooked up yet! We'll see.

Ambassadeur 6500C is the only reel to use. Great line capacity and tremendous drag at a reasonable price!

On my casting rod, I've got an Ambassadeur 5501, which has a left-handed crank. I'm right-handed, so I like to hold the rod with my right. Anyone else prefer this? On my spinning rod, I've got a Shimano (not sure of the exact model, but it's pretty middle of the road, maybe $50-$60).

For backbouncing, I like to use a Shimano Calcutta 400 strapped to a GLoomis MB843 rod. This combo is great for backbouncing roe or Kwikfish in current or frog water. For side drifting for trout and steelies, I prefer to use a Shimano Stradic 1000 spinning reel and a GLoomis SR842-2. Both combos are a little on the pricey side but what the hey.

I have four rigs that I use for freshwater salmon and steelhead fishing.
1. 10.6ft custom spinning rod for float and jig fishing with a Quantum Blue Runner R3-40 reel with 8lb. Izorline. This is my favorite.

2. 8.6ft Berkley Buzz Ramsey Lighting Rod (spinning) with a Shimano Sahara 4000F spinning rod with 10lb. Fenwick river line.

3. 8.6ft Berkley Buzz Ramsey Lighting Rod (casting)
with a Quantum Iron IR3 reel and 10lb Izorline.

4. Quantum 8.6ft Graphite medium casting rod, with aAmbassadeur 6500C3 reel with 15lb. Izorline.

Nothing fancy but they get the job done.

Dont get to fish for steelhead to much up here, but for kings I use a Penn International 965,it has a super smooth drag, better then the calcutta.Have used it for two king seasons and have yet to burn it up.For silvers I got the Abu garcia,Morrum,3600.Only one season on it,but seems to be a well built reel.I am waiting to see the new Fin-Nor bait caster might be a good one!Has anyone seen it?

I have a Curado that I really like, well worth the money. I also have 2 5501's, and a 6501 for salmon. The Curado is a dream to cast, minimal backlashes and very smooth.

For me its hard to beat the price and durability of the Ambassadors. 5000s and 5500s. Have a lot of them, and no complaints.

Being a rookie to steeheading, I use a shimano spirex on a Lamiglas certified pro and a shimano sahara on a kunnan..
Have`nt got those bait casters down enough yet I guess..*L*

Tony
Bait casters offer so much more control when fighting fish and line control while fishing. Best way to learn is by doing....we all spent time on the beach picking the backlashes out.
