Bald eagle at my feeder
      #50402 - 02/25/03 03:50 AM

Okay, so that was a trick lead in. In fact my feeder is my pond and yesterday I came home to see a Bald Eagle standing on the edge of my pond picking away at another one of my trout. I went to get my camera and spooked him as I tried to get close enough for a good picture. He flew away with the fish in his talons. This is the second fish in a week.

I went down to where he was standing and there were hundreds of eggs on the grass so obviously he had snagged one of my nice hens. I wish I could convince him to eat sunflower seeds instead.

Pick up a few of those 'free kittens' that are always in the classifieds.

Up in BC, in the tidewater areas south of Vancouver, this is a very common site. We used to sit in our hot-tub and watch a nesting pair pick apart the day's catch. I burned through a lot of film trying to get them on film making a hit.(When they were in the air, the smarter kitty kats were no where to be seen)
There is a huge migratory bird sanctuary nearby and a large number of 'formerly-migrating' waterfowl that are in the area year round. There are some very well fed eagles around there. Every yr, several of them are taken into the shelter with poisoning symptoms because they eat ducks that have been feeding in fields and ingested fertilizers/chems etc if there is a spill, over-use, or poor-distribution.

I have finally heard of a good use for cats! Baldies are a magnificent bird. I watched one grab a belly up 17" trout out of the water. It was only about 30 feet from the boat! Way cool.

Looked out the window last week and noticed the neighbor's horses were gathered in one corner of his pasture, They were circling nervously, and stopping to stare at the far end of the field. I grabbed the binoculars and started searching for the bear, cougar, or coyote that had them so spooked. What I spotted was the largest bald eagle I've ever seen walking about in the pasture. It stayed on the ground for fifteen more minutes, and had the horses really upset the entire time. When it took off, it flew near the horses and they bolted in every direction. Don't know which was more interesting, the eagle, or the horses reaction to it! We're seeing mature eagles and mottled juveniles every day along the Cedar River. Look for them in the tall cottonwoods near the river between Renton and Maple Valley.

He was back again yesterday and at this rate I'll be out of fish by the end of March! I was thinking I should try to make a somewhat realistic scarecrow and sit it on the bench next to the pond. Either that, or plant the pond with bass after he wipes out the trout. Somehow, it won't be as hard to watch him pick apart a bass as it is to see one of my beautiful trout being gulped! At least the bass would propagate a little easier.

The kitty thing wouldn't work because my dogs would finish them off before the eagle could get to them! Besides, I like cats.

The big boy scored another fish last evening. This time I got some good video of him tearing the fish apart.

Right Marty...those lazy bums! They were both catching ZZZ's the whole time! I guess I should have gotten bird dogs.
