Westport Herring
      #51373 - 03/05/03 03:17 AM

Well for those of you who have been waiting for the herring to show up down here on the docks, the waiting is over.

Last saturday I went down and fished float 7 for three hours and caught 4. Sunday, I fished the same dock and caught 18 in 3 hours. And Tuesday I fished the same dock after work for an hour and a half and caught just over 4 dozen.
I wouldnt say the are in as well as they will be here in a few days, but its a start.
I will try to get some pics. And keep you up dated.

Hey Marsha,
When you turn off 101 at the "Y". Stay on that road (Montisano). It will take you all the way to the docks. I have been doing the best down on Float 7 That would be to the left at the blinking stop light, and down about four floats.

Let me know when you going to come down. It would be nice to see you and Mike again.

The fishing should be getting better daily. I did'nt fish today to wet and windy. But I plan on hitting it all this weekend I hope.
The herring is aproximatly 8-10" long. And is going to be great fresh for the March 16th Lingcod opener (hint hint).

I hopeing to get a nice pic for Marty's gremmlins.

Went last night (3-10) no people, no fish, one seal.
reports are that they have been outside and just running in and out of the boat basin. Big storm on the way. Unless it's real bad I'm going to try tommorrow. I'll post results.

Tried my luck today for a few herring in Westport. Didn't have any. Tried float 7 and 20 with the same results..zero..I did realize one thing though today, I was crazy for being there. The wind was blowing so hard that the seagulls were walking instead of flying. Anyway guess I'll wait a few more days and try again.. ....Skip

Is it legal to throw one hand net? seems like a lot of work to catch the herring one by one.

Marty,

We use a herring jig with 8 hooks on it. Yes, you actually can get 8 herring on at one time. Those little boogers put up quite a fight too. Makes you feel like you are really catching something.

Hey Fishcatcher,
I went down to the docks after work(3:45), nothing. I also fished 7. There were three guys fishing for crab and I peeked into their buckets and it looked as if they had four or five crab.I might do that today. The weather is not going to let us do much more than that.

Marsha, The herring jigs that I have bought only have 6 jigs on them. but you are so right. Fill the hooks and it does'nt take long to get your 10#'s.

Hey Reel_Nut.

Thanks for sharing the herring reports. I hope they do come in.

On the Puget Sound waterfront, herring usually start swarming around our floodlight at night, when we're trying to catch/jig squid. Like the squid, they seem to get attracted to the light.

The ones we caught in Puget Sound were small, however (about 3-4 inches)--but there were a lot of them attracted to the light.

I wonder if using a flood light will work in the Westport basin? Use of artificial light is legal under the Dept. of Fish & Wildlife rules, but may be violative of Westport Marina rules that restrict use of the docks in the evenings?

Those sea lions in the marina are probably not helping the herring run. Maybe the light will scare them off but attract the herring?

Here fishy, fishy...
