Ok, I am thinking of building my first rod. I want a Rainshadow blank but not sure what. I will mainly drift fish for Salmon and Steelies but would also like to be able to use a float. Any suggestions?
Also what am I missing on my shopping list?
Blank guides cork thread epoxy (what kind?) sandpaper phone to call Rod Builders 911

Your list is pretty complete but I will add a couple things.
Blank - you gotta decide on which model rear cork (probably 14 inches) fore cork (probably 2.5 inches, maybe 3.5 inches) reel seat - decide if you want a trigger (for casting rods) or maybe exposed blank reel seat Guides - several styles out there for spinning or casting, with different finishes and different ceramic inserts Epoxy - I would recommend 30 minute epoxy, a once ounce kit will built a rod. Thread - size A in your favorite color Denatured Alcohol - Very handy for cleaning up epoxy and brushes razor blade - single edge for trimming thread on the wraps Rod Finish - Flex Coat makes some great products, I like the high build Masking Tape - for temporarily attaching guides till you get them tied on, and for reel seat arbors. Hot Melt Glue - for the tip Brush - small one for applying the finish
A lot of Rainshadow rod models to choose from, pick a length you want, decide on one or 2 piece blank, then find the line rating in that length that meets your requirements, then decide if you want a spinning or casting reel.
from your description of rod requirements:

Most drift fishers like at least 8.5 feet or more. When you throw in float fishing longer rods are nice to mend the line. 9 or 9.5 foot models (or longer) would be the ordinary for float fishing. If you like a heavier rod maybe a ISA1086 (9 ft- 12-25) would be ok, or if you like a lighter rod maybe an IST1143 (9.5 ft 6-12 lb). An IST1025 is also a very popular drift fishing choice (8.5 ft 10-17 lb)
Good luck.

I just started about 2 months ago and watch out it can become an addiction. Gregs Custom Fishing Rods in Lake Stevens Gregs www.gregscustomrods.com/ is a good place to start for some information and supplies. I travel alot and could not commit to the classes. Greg took about an hour one day went through the process and did more for me than I expected in encouraging to try it and see how well you can do. I'm on my fourth rod and now ready to sell my commercial rods as I replace them with my custom made ones. I agree with Bait-O-Eggs on the supplies you need. You might also look at a hand wrapper for about $35 and a drying motor for your finish.
Good Luck and let me know if i can be of some help. Love to see pics when you are done or in the process.
