Well are there any on this site? I have a 45 caliber CVA that I have killed only one deer with. I love to shoot it though. I would probably hunt more with it if the seasons were a little longer. It seems they are continually making them shorter and shorter

For 13 years I have hunted with a muzzleloader, I have a .54 thompson and a .45 knight. The last few years I have only elk hunted with my .45 knight, (Went back to modern firearm for deer) No elk as of yet but have came close the last two years. It is true our seasons are getting shorter and the units the game dept. picks for us to hunt, really suck! Any way I have fun at it and the challenge is immense.

I have ML hunted since the mid 80's. You guys are correct, poor seasons and areas now. I use three .54's, two T/C Renegades and a Stainless Deerstalker by Lyman. I've taken 10 deer and three elk with ML, but I too have gone back to modern rifle for deer, still ML for elk. There is supposed to be some improvements for our areas and seasons this year, so let us cross our fingers and hope for the best! I do love hunting with a ML. Bill

i have a ML 50cal that i bought to hunt elk but have yet to use it. i've hunted deer with a ML before on the east coast and once here for modern with a six shooter on my hip.

Been hunting since the early 80's with a couple of flintlocks I scratch-built, one a .50 poorboy longrifle (stock is one pretty piece of curly maple), and a .62 smoothbore NorthWest Trade gun...use the smoothie with a .61 roundball for brushy hunting, or with shot for turkey, etc. Have a couple of caplocks but don't shoot 'em much anymore. Once the ins and outs, along with a particular gun's likings, of flintlock shooting are learned they are supremely reliable, regardless of weather. There are a few "tricks to the trade" to learn. I've dropped fourteen elk and 23 deer with a patched roundball from a "rocklock," and bagged my turkeys the last three seasons with the trade gun. To tell the truth, as of this year I'm not all that interested in shooting anything...just want to get out and prowl the timber with my flinter and put the stalk on a few critters...that's a "successful hunt" to me at this point.
Just looked at the regs for next fall and I am not happy. I live on the North Fork of the Ahtanum west of Yakima....WDFW has provided several new elk opportunities west of the Cascades but gutted our smokepole hunting on this side of the mountains, giving it to the archers. I just returned from extended reserve duty and couldn't get an application in, so the fact that they gave out a lot of permits isn't helping me any, doggone it.
