Any Shrooms Springing Up?
      #52758 - 03/15/03 08:23 PM

It seems like spring has sprung. With all the rain and warm winds the trees are beginning to get leaves, there's flowers on some of the berry bushes and I've seen some not so desirable shrooms around. Haven't looked for the good ones yet though.

Actually spring is a week away but aren't those early morrels due to be showing right soon. The oysters will be coming up a little later with some more warm weather and warm rains. How about real morrels in May?

Anybody been out looking? Picking ?

Besides the early morrels, oysters and real morrels ...
What are some of your favorite early mushrooms?

What I do is keep an eye on the nettles. When they get up to about 6-8 inches I figure it's time to start looking. Over the years I can recollect seeing nettle plants around 8-18" on successful early morel gatherings.

I look at steaming up a sack full of young nettle tops as being an appetizer and promise of a mushroom feast.

Ever tried deep fried clams and morels with a side of asparagus? That's about as close to mycological paradise as one can get.

As someone who first experienced stinging nettles while romping naked with a girl in my youth, please let me in on your secret recipe as I have some revenge to exact on that species!!

It didn't register at first. A tree stump. Maybe a rock.

7-pound giant morel found in Ottawa, Kansas!
