Okay,
I have an idea for catching trout that you may want to try, if you haven't already. I regularly fish for Steelhead and Salmon using jigs and floats, usually in the 1/8 oz variety. On just about every trip I end up catching a nice cutthroat or two, and on a recent trip I even got two big 4-5lb Dollies, on jig and float.
Last weekend I floated the Yakima to try specifically fishing for trout with some "micro jig". These are jigs in the 1/16-1/32 oz size. I was fishing in a selective rules area, so no bait was allowed, nor was scent. I ended up hooking a few rainbows on the 1/32oz jigs, all in the top of the mouth near the snout. I know that jigs will work in moving water. Here are some jigs in different sizes from 1/32 to 1/8th oz. So here is my revolutionary idea. Ready? Okay. Tie up a few of these micro jigs using the Gamakatsu pre-poured jigheads in the smallest weight available. Use chenile, or even the chenile pipecleaners available at the craft store if you don't have a fly vise, for the body and then, here's the revolutionary part, smear your powerbait on the chenile, but don't cover the hook. Wet the jig first so the chenile will keep the powerbait on the jig shank so you don't have to use those tiny size 14 trebles. Next, fish these "sinking" powerbait rigs under a float within two or three feet of the surface. Here is what one looks like, ready to fish.
This technique should work during the very early season when the stockers are near the surface. You can adjust this technique for later in the season by using slip bobbers to probe the deeper depths.
Forgive me, Zen, for co-mingling fly tying, jig fishing AND powerbait. The shame of it all, I know. I am still trying to perfect my "powerbait" fly. I think it will involve spawn sac netting, but I'll get there.
Let me know of this works, cause My boys nd I will try it come opening weekend.

Andy, Interesting idea...what about just vertically jigging it for the big boys. I invite you and your boys to my favorite Lake in W. Washington where we have caught over 200 14+ inch fish each of the last four years, yes thats 200 per year! It is an even drive for both of us so it should work out if your willing! My boat, your jigs. Let me know.

I will vouch for the addition of powerbait to conventional lures for trout. Made bux into a believer last year on the opener My wager would be hes packing some for his lures this year. I will be packing too

I'll be packing, along with some other secret weapons. I have used just a small split shot right above my tiny treble hook foated under a bobber, but never even thought of a jig. That could be very productive for them planters. Thanks for the idea.

One of the problems I've had, when targeting the triploids, is that the 8-10 inch stockers attack my bait before it can get to the triploids. Since the Wash. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife counts all trout as part of the limit (whether kept or released) when using bait, it's somewhat difficult to catch a keeper limit of triploids when using bait.
Since scented jigs or jigs with Power Bait would be classified as "bait," any ideas/thoughts as to whether the triploids will bite on these jigs (unscented)?
For that matter, any thoughts or suggestions on big-sized baits or lures that can attract and hook triploids, but not hook stockers. Maybe one of these Power Bait jigs in a larger size?

Sounds like a nifty spin on a already effective technique. Over here in CA during, say, November through February, at one of the lakes I frequent 1/32 oz in 1 1/2" length tube jigs are an excellent way to hook up stupid amounts of trout. Your technique may just up my catch

OK......so if you juice a jig, does it still count as bait or can you release the fish???.......My buddy has a print out of two powerbait recipes from berkely( dont ask how he got them) but if you could duplicate just the scent in juice form, would it be legal to release them?

Hey Chongo - where u been?
I've been having lots of fun lately with a spinnerfly. I'm experimenting with using it on fly or casting setups. I tried using Powerbait on it, but it messes up the weight and seems like overkill anyway. What do I know, I've never fished stillwater in my life. My 'practice' lake has lots of dark water and is nicely sheltered from the wind most evenings.

Chongo469: In WA state, any scented lure is classified as bait. So, trout caught on scented lures count as part of your limit, whether kept or released. Of course, if your friend can give you the power bait recipe w/o the scent, that would probably count as an unscented lure and you can release as many as you please, until you retain your 5 fish.

PowerBait tastes horrible, but better than Hoppe's #9 (don't ask)
Chongo, maybe in the fall, you can help me break in a new rifle and give me some markmanship pointers?

COOL - Barret? or McMillan? The CDNs used the McMillans to great effect in Afghanistan, but were robbed of their chance by their coward Prime Minister
I once shot a few rounds through a Weatherby 468Mag (I used to be 5'10" somewhat shorter since that day)

FishDoc,
I have used jigs on Lahontans over at Lenore with some very goods results. Tied a black leech pattern one day made out of a black wool glove, thread and some head cement after I lost my last fly. That was some great fun, besting my buddy Jeff with my 5.25' ultralight while he was using choronomids (sp?). Yeah, I'm interested, and I will supply you with a bunch of jigs if needed.

i first saw this rig used for trout at big bear lake in southern cal. The lake sits at about 8000 ft and hat a very small but deep dam on one end. the only way to fish the front of the damm(where the trout stack up in the winter) is to cast from shore, hit the dam and allow your jig under a sliding float to sink down about 60 ft. then just twitch it a little. I have seen 5lb rainbows caught this way and have caught 2 to 3 lbs rainbows this way. That was in 93 to 95. I have used this same method in lakes over deep drop offs. also use worms on the same sliding float rig for bows and browns.
There was a guy writing for cal fish and game magizine that has been fishing small (1/32 oz) jigs in small streams in the serrias for years. I found that a lot of people do it but few talk about it. It will out fish flys anyday. Where around here can I stream fish for trout in the summer? I live in marysville.

When I first moved up here from california I was amazed that nobody was doing that here in southern oregon. After trying it I know why. For some reason tubes have only been effective down south for me.
btw I caught my first trout ever and white and yellow tube.

I have tried something similar to that and it works ok. Nothing, and I mean nothing can outfish a #5 gold Rapala floating minnow flatlined 60' behind the boat on 4# test. I will go up against any technique with the Rapala for brooders, triploids and spring stockies. You can limit in ten minutes with this lure, that is if you keep those stockies!!
