Spent some time Saturday morning on Westport's south jetty. The weather couldn't have been nicer. Enough fish were being caught to make it interesting. One fisherman had two lings. Another one had a seabass. We caught and released a small ling, lost another, and kept a large kelp greenling for dinner. All of our fish were hooked on jigs and plastic worms. The seabass weren't showing in any numbers on Saturday, but one angler reported seeing a bunch caught a week earlier.
Now for the bad news: The greenling's flesh was so loaded with parasites, we had to toss it. The State Parks Dept. is now requiring visitors to pay a $5.00 fee to park in the south jetty lot while they crab, fish, beachcomb, or surf. The big jetty is not a place for younger children. There are cavernous holes in the rocks, many of which are slippery from seaspray and seaweed. Treacherous tidal currents, breaking waves, and wakes from passing boats require the jetty angler to be constantly vigilant.
The surf was really pounding this weekend; didn't see anybody surf fishing.

CedarR have you tried the finger jetties along the Westport marina? I've had pretty good luck off those for just about anything you can catch off the big jetty and it's a whole lot safer and less work to fish. Plus no $5 fee  .
If you really want to have some fun with Black rockfish hit those jetties nearer to the marina right at dusk with a light spin outfit, a casting bobber and a whitewinged streamer . Some nights it's a fish every cast it seems  .

Thanks for the tip, Gooose. Next time, I'll spend more time fishing on the finger jetties. Years ago, we took seabass off the jetty by the observation tower, and sea perch on the last jetty by the pilings. Only saw a few fishermen on the last finger jetty, on our recent trip. Bet that changes when the seabass are in!
