I've been an avid shooter since I can remember. I've always worked on my own guns. Just minor gunsmithing, nothing major. I've disassembled everything I have ever owned. But recently I have been playing around with my Kimber .45. They are great guns out of the box, but some of the parts I felt or just wanted to replace. I just fit a ambi-saftey to it today. It wasn't too hard, but not too easy either. It took some filing and fitting to get everything nice and smooth and tight. Next I'll be fitting an Ed Brown Memory Groove grip saftey. If that project goes well I'll mill the slide to accept a Bomar rear sight. If I manage to do that without trashing my gun I'll take on another modification.
The point of my post is do any of you guys do all your own work?
With success comes confidence, and pride in a job, that you did, well done...

Yep, I'm still around...sometimes! I really miss you guys, and check in on occasion just to make sure no one's in any serious trouble. Yes, working on my guns is one of my (many) hobbies. Nothing major (I don't have any machine tools or machine shop skills, yet), but I can make/fit small parts, do stockwork, and checker the stocks as well.
My current project is rebuilding a 125 year old Remington rolling block...having the barrel replaced with a .40-65 caliber match-grade barrel from Badger, and will restock it in classic Remington sporting rifle style. This will be my Black Powder Silhouette rifle when done.
Have fun with that Kimber,
Greg (I got too many hobbies) Pennell

Shane I do some. I have built a couple rifles by buying the action and screwing new barrels in putting new triggers and safetys on as well as making the stocks. For my scope mounts I have all that done by a gunsmith.. The stocks I buy as a block so I make them from start to fisish which is nice cux I can make em to fit me from foregrip to cheek piece.. I did some checkering on one which turned out good..

Im still just an amatuer, but i recently pillar and glass bedded my newest rifle (35 whelen). I spent MANY hours on the net researching how to do it, and all the little tricks and stuff. Wow, it turned out great! I took it into the local smith to get a decellerator recoil pad ground to fit, and he asked "who did your bedding?" I told him i did it myself, and he said "that is VERY good bedding job, i have seen a lot of gunsmiths that dont even come close to that good of job". Well it made me feel pretty good, i think im going to try and do some more of my own work from now on. Besides learning a lot and saving $$$, its actually a lot of fun. And it feels good knowing its your own work:)

Sweet - I was just looking to borrow one. We'll work out something for trade. Maybe some of my famous, 'almost guaranteed to last 3 casts' wintere steelhead flies.
