Trout rod suggestions? new
      #32471 - 04/04/02 07:23 PM

Hi there. Can anyone help me w/ suggestions for a decent casting rod? I just got a Shimano Crestfire (my 1st BC reel) to help eliminate the twisties from trolling. Now I can't find a light rod that would be compatable. I'll be using it mainly for Rainbows, maybe some Kokanee w/ the occasional bass thrown in. Thanks for any help!

By the way, this is my first BB post. Sorry if my etiquette is off.

Seachongo.. Welcome to the board.

I may be a cheapskate but here is what I do. If you go to K Mart, Walmart or wherever, often they have trout rods for $9.99 and they are made by Eagle Claw, Shakespeare etc. as promo rods. For that price, they are nice little rods..limber yet strong enough to horse a good sized trout if you need to. Since most of the trout you will encounter in the Western WA lakes are hathery fish on the small side, these rods have very sensitive tips and you can detect even the lightest of bites.

Also, if you happen to break a tip or something, it's not a heartbreaker at ten bucks.

I just purchased two G Loomis cr842-2 baitcasting rods. They are specifically designed to troll for kokanee and trout. It is a great Rod and I love it. It weights just 3.3 oz and is 7 feet long. The list is a little bit more than a $9.99 rod from wal mart but worth the money in my opinion list is $215.00 . I have had the problem of finding a rod that would handle a 5 pound trout and still give me some excitement catching a 12 inch rainbow. This Rod does just that. [cut plug]

Thanks for the responses! Troller, the rods you picked up sound like a piece of heaven. Unfortunately, I think my budget would look like hell if I spent that kinda dough on a rod right now. Though I am trying hard to find ways to rationalize it (fish for dinner every night for 2 months?)!
Maltby, I'm certainly eager for a bargain and Walmart is definately one of my favorite shopping places. I'm willing to spend up to ~ $100, but preferably $50-75. I'd like something that will last for a while and be something i can grow into. I've fished w/ spinning gear a fair amt., but never baitcasting. Anybody have more good ideas on rods for the job?
BTW, Maltby, do You live in Maltby? I lived there ~ 4 years ago and it was my favorite place I've ever been. Still coyotes roaming around?

check out sportco in fife they have a lamiglass that is really close to the g loomis I dont remember the model or number but if you tell the right person at the counter the number I gave you on the g loomis or what you are looking to use it for they will send you in the right direction. I think the lamiglass was about $90 bucks. [cut plug]

Seachongo...technically, no I don't live in Maltby. I have a Woodinville address but I am closer to Maltby than I am to Woodinville. Maltby is kind of a joke because the main road to Maltby goes by house so we always call our place Maltby Pass.

There are still plenty of coyotes..I see them all the time on Maltby Road and elsewhere and we often hear them at night. We have deer as well and plenty of possums!

I'm thinking of going to Silver lake tomorrow if the wind isn't too strong. I dinked around with the boat today...washed it up and got my gear ready and the battery charged...I'll see how it goes.

I like Ugly Stick rods. They don't break the bank, are nice and sensitive so you can feel the bite, yet they can handle larger fish well.

I have 4 of them. Two smalls and two mediums. I pair these with Quantum reels and haven't had any problems at all. The rods cost around $30 but I got my last two at a KMart that is going out of business so I got 20% off. At $30, if your break the rod your not out much.

how about shakespear rods?
i have a shakespear intrepid8'6 casting and sigma 7' spinning rod, and their great!
the 7' medium action is great for trout, and ive even caught a coho on it:)

also, berkly lightning rods are great too, and not too expensive

Best trout rod ever built is a 3' 6" Bingo Bug. Been using these rods for several years and have caught trout up to 8 pounds on them. Talk about a blast using 2lb test on an ultra light rod the length of your arm. The best part about it is they are only $10.

Tight lines,
Jason

I have a number of Fenwick 5.25'-6' rods. All are ultralight to light weight rods. They will handle fish up to 8lbs. Caught many a Lahonton CT and even a steelhead on them. These rods are in the $50+ range.
