Since I'm taking over the mod duties on these two pages here, I figured I'd put out a welcome to everyone to come on in and feel your way around. Most people out there are either new to fly fishing, or have been around it at one time or another. This is a good place for any of you who have questions on techniques, rivers, and all other general fly fishing related subjects.

So, come on in and make yourself known. Nothing wrong with being a bug tosser. Only bad if you think you're better then everyone else while you're doing it Luckily for me, I'm a switch hitter (luckily, I ONLY do that in the FISHING arena ). So for me, I'm at home with the fly guys and the gear guys, we're all one happy family .

There's no stupid questions. I'm a bug tosser, and proud of it!!! Just the elitist types make me

Thanks 69
for the nice welcome, that is.
I've been recuperating from nasal surgery (no, not from sticking it into other peep's bidness ) and have been tackle tinkering the last few days. I've been reworking the braided loops on my flylines, so after reading your post I thought I'd post a couple of links on how to make your own (with apologies to the forum if directions have been previously posted). Anyhow, they are:
site 1
site 2

I purchased the braided material at The Morning Hatch in Tacoma. They have it in 20 & 50 lb. tests. I used the 20 lb on 7 wt lines and smaller and the bigger stuff on 10 & 11 wt lines. The 20 lb line also came in handy for the heavier sinking lines (with their smaller diameters).
Let me know how it goes for you folks if you decide to play around with it.

Nice to see you here Steelworker. Actually, I make a loop, but I integrate with the line itself (unless it's a lead core sinktip which I do similar to above. But what I do is strip off the coating of the fly line. You have exact type core as your backing. I strip off enough to make a decent loop. Then, I either put a needle into fly line and feed excess back through touched up with epoxy and wrap outer coating with rod wrapping thread. Or, I simply just take the loop, leave on outside, and tie down in a nailknot fashion. This way, the line you have is actually straight lined to fly line. Both are one length, not an added piece. I do make some for my sink tips when I have multitip lines. But, I've become lazy. I like the multitip lines out there, and just buy them pre looped. LOL.

There's no shame at all in playing both sides. I do it. There are good guys and bad guys who do both.
Jerry, I've actually quit posting on one northwest fly fishing board because of all the attitude there--too many complaints about "gear chuckers."

I used to build loops in my lines the same way... 1st saw the method in Trey Combs' Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies back in the 70's and it creates a really strong loop. But the braided loops are much easier/faster (I know lazy ) and if you build 'em the way Blanton says to, they won't fail. I think they turn over a little better too, but that could just be me imagining I could tell the difference.
If you do the braided loops, you will have the added benefit of learning how to make lanyards (put a loop on each end of a the braid and superglue the outer and inner cores) for your flyfishing gizmos
BTW, as I was cruising the site, I saw that my post probably should have been posted in the FLY FISHING...LINE BUILDING section. PLease feel free to morph into your moderator mode and wield your power to move my post, if you like.

Hey all,

I am a switch hitter as well. Lately I have been fishing the local C & R lakes (Kitsap and Mason counties). If anyone is interested send an e-mail. I will probably fish these lakes until the June 1 steelhead opener. Then I will be back chasing the wily summer run with the odd trip out on the sound/canal for SRC and resident coho.

So if anyone is interested in some fine local lake fly fishing this month (May) fire me an e-mail (note: must have a float tube and/or pontoon boat and be willing to carry the tube about 2 miles and the pontoon about 1/2 mile).

Tight lines.

Well I am a long time (secrect fly guy) I am coming out of the closet. I used to be a fly guy for years until it became popular and the fly guys thought they were the best around. I am secrectly coming back to it.
Being how I havent been in the fly scene for a while how has the attitude of fly guys changed? Are the bait folks hated still??

Depends Dan new [Re: fishmasterdan]
      #56925 - 05/02/03 07:20 AM

I was in same boat, but it wasn't a secret. Never had a problem flogging. Not until "that movie" came out. Then, alot of rich guys started buying gear. And if you notice, prices on fly gear went through the roof too. I pretty much still hang low. You can usually tell the "elitist" types. Most are fairly new fisherman usually. Just depends. I know guys who have 20+ years in, and they're usually all really cool. But if they've learned within the last 20 or so (about time River Runs Through It came out) it's 50/50. I know for a fact I've been borderline ridiculed because I use bait as well. I was down tossing a spey when a couple flyguys showed up. They were all fine and dandy until they asked "Who's baitrod is that?". I had a baitcaster with a spoon with me as well. I said it was mine. The whole chat changed. Almost like I "wasn't good enough" to talk to them at that point. I mean, it was a complete 180!!! But, the same can be said for alot of bait guys. Some see a flogger and assume they're elitist scum. I usually don't judge until I have a chance to talk to them first.

For me, I don't care. If you enjoy fishing, and are doing it legal. More power to you.

Well.. yup I toss bugs too. No better way for trout. IMO. been at it for over 30 years. I have tied a few but never mastered the art but have enjoyed catching fish on my own fly. I have had the pleasure of fishing some of those famous waters around Yellowstone. Make the tirp. Its worth it. 4 lb Wild Rainbow on a dry. To sweet. I have lots to lfearn about this area too.

Dan, I've found that there are still a lot of "elitists" out there. Perfect case in point, I was in Tacoma's Fly shop called the Morning Hatch a while back. I was shopping for some supplies for tying jigs. I had a handfull of assorted chenilles and feathers. One of the clerks comes up and asks if I needed any help. After looking at the strange assortment I was planning on purchasing he asks "what are you going to be tying up?" I replied "Steelhead jigs". Well he lets out an audible gasp, scurrys back behind the counter and huddles up with all the groupies standing around and whispers to them for a few seconds. They all turn in unision and send "bait hating" glares my way.

I couldn't help but to laugh at all of them. Needless to say I've been put on a list at that shop, because evertime I've been in since then no one bothers coming out to ask me if I need any help. And I still get the glares...

LOL TR new [Re: Drifterat]
      #58457 - 05/15/03 07:20 AM

I know exactly what you're talking about. Why I seldom go into any fly shop unless I'm in desperate need of materials and can't wait to get from my distributor. Luckily for myself, I've been caught actually being able to flyfish by some of the shops owners, so am now regarded as "acceptible", especially when it comes to wanting a hot report from me. LOL.

Yeah, but elitists can be found on both sides of the fence though. Not all flyguys are like that. Some flyguys get same BS from baitguys. Oh well, if I enjoy doing it, to hell with them. LOL

Great Fly-Fishing shop (other gear too) new [Re: Steelheader69]
      #58472 - 05/15/03 10:42 AM

Greg's Custom Rods in Lake Stevens.
Not only will he patiently answer just about any dumb question you can come up with, he has rod-building, fly-tying, and fly-casting classes at very cheap prices. No attitude, other than fishing is fun, no matter what gear you use. He builds and fishes many types of gear.
I just finished a rod-building class and he was really helpful and supplies all the consumables.
It's a family operation, with their teenage son also helping out there, and they have great prices, great customer service, and will special order anything you want.

I am new to fishing in both gear and the fly aspects. So I sit back with an unbiased view of them both. You get A**holes on both sides of the fence. But I will say this .....I will NEVER go into another fly shop without Jerry. I was shopping around at a certain flyshop....that shall remain nameless.....looking around for ideas on SH69's Christmas present, and they treated me like SH**. Not sure if it was because I am a female.....who rightly admits I still do not know what the hell I am doing when it comes to fly fishing. Or if it was because I was wearing a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt....not dressy enough for them. Or maye it was beacuse they were just (not a nice person), lol.

Anyways....like I said I am new to almost all aspects of fishing, have a few more years experience with gear, but that is only because I can cast gear without nailing myself in the head, lol. I think flyfishing is beautiful and would love to be able to openly admit one day that I am a flyfisher.....just not there yet

I enjoy all kinds of fishing. But just like everything else in the world you have nice people and you have A**holes. A**holes aren't exclusive to one group...they like to sprend themselves around, lol. But the good people make up for the buttheads out there.
