Westport Halibut Report/Story
      #58109 - 05/12/03 12:16 PM

Went Halibut fishing out of Westport with FishSlayer yesterday. What a ride! 40 miles out in 2 foot chop on a 4 foot swell. The ride time was something like 2 1/2 hours to a spot that we picked up from the web. We fished with 2 or 3 pound leads on a spreader with Horse Herring and Octopussy's in just over 500 feet of water. Erin scored first, a little about 10 pounds. Erin and Fishslayer have a different theory on bringing on to the boat. They stab it through the heart which is right behind the ventral fin. This tends to really piss them off and they seem to put on the best fight after being mortally wounded. I was concerned that the fish might come unbuttoned after all that way up. I would prefer to gaff or net, tie off and then bleed 'em. I drug up a nice of around 25 pounds. Fishslayer and didn't get hooked up once. Erin saved the day and limited the boat with another of about 15 pounds or so.

The bait we had was very nice. Bill got it from an asian market. The herring were marked "Good Food" I figure it was a typo and was supposed to say "Gook Food" Really, for less money than you spend for "bait" you can do quite well at an Asian food store.

We did manage to just about get run over by the only boat within 40 miles. The main tank gave out right as we crossed in front of about a 60 foot bouy tender. That was exciting for a couple of moments. Wonder what they are fishing for that deep?

All in all it was a good trip. I look forward to the next time out in the Ocean. We will be looking for more Halibut places, preferably closer than 40 miles! from the port.

If you have any ideas or GPS coordinates for Westport Please, please let us know.

Thanks Fishslayer! Let's do it again (or something like it!) soon!

Why Westport? I much prefer Marty's neighborhood. Don't have to run out as far for good size ones. Lots in the 25-50 range.

Gutz, I emailed you the secret to making halibut docile. And you don't need a handgun!

Thank You Very Much Aunty M.

That was one hell of a boat ride!
We are looking at options in the Strait.
